Jennifer Lopez’s Curly Lob Makes Gym Hair Look Good

– health.com

The gym probably isn't the birth place of your good hair day. Sweat, the deflating volume that comes along with that sweat, and hair tie dents don't usually exactly make for the type of hairstyle you want to capture in a pic and throw up on Instagram Stories. But leave it to Jennifer Lopez to change our expectations and make gym hair look, well, damn good.

Caught in paparazzi pics, J.Lo was snapped leaving the gym with her hair styled in a curly, super voluminous short lob.

With this look, J.Lo also redefined what one would call "gym hair," as it's not a messy topknot or a ponytail, though she could have easily just taken her hair down before walking out of the gym doors.

All we need now is for Lopez to show us how to get that J.Lo glow in just minutes after hopping off of a treadmill, and we're set.

Blake Lively Just Revealed the Exact Beauty Products She Uses Every Day

– health.com

Blake Lively not only serves total inspiration for our wardrobes (chic pantsuits, anyone?) but also for our daily makeup look (hello, natural glow!). And if you're blonde, you've probably shown a picture of the star to your colorist, trying to mimic her gold, Rapunzel-like mane. Hey, we don't blame you.

Luckily for us, the 31-year-old mom and actress recently shared her personal beauty collection on her Instagram Story, posting three photos of her impressive (and newly tidied) makeup drawer. Her stash includes foundation, highlighters, serums, lip products galore, and even an affordable drugstore facial sunscreen.

"When you organize once, then gotta share with the world," Lively captioned her post, labeling each product with its corresponding brand.

Looking at her collection, it's obvious that Lively is a fan of British makeup brand Charlotte Tilbury. We also couldn't help but notice that she sticks to a single tube of mascara, the cult favorite Diorshow. When it comes to her infamous wavy tresses, Lively keeps one hair product readily available in her drawer: Kerastase Resistance Volumifique Mousse, which explains her shiny, voluminous locks.

While we're not surprised that Lively's beauty haul includes pricier options like La Mer, By Terry, and Christian Louboutin, we didn't expect to see more affordable brands like Burt's Bees, Cerave, Stila, Urban Decay, and Essie as well.

Wondering which beauty products Lively uses on the reg? Here's everything we spotted in her stash.

• Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation ($46; sephora.com)

• Georgio Armani Beauty Fluid Sheer ($62; sephora.com)

• Marc Jacobs Beauty Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter ($44; sephora.com)

• Stila Convertible Color Dual Lip and Cheek Cream ($25; amazon.com)

• By Terry Cellularose Brightening CC Lumi-Serum ($91; dermstore.com)

• Caudalie Paris Beauty Elixir ($16; amazon.com)

• Burt's Bees Lip Balm ($6 for 2-pack; amazon.com)

• Georgia Armani Beauty Rouge D'Armani Matte Lipstick ($38; sephora.com)

• Christian Louboutin Velvet Matte Lip Colour ($90; sephora.com)

• Diorshow Mascara ($30; sephora.com)

• Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler ($19; amazon.com)

• CeraVe Sunscreen Face Lotion SPF 50 ($15; amazon.com)

• Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant in Vanilla Lavender ($13; amazon.com)

• Essie Nail Polish ($9; ulta.com)

• Blonde Bobby Pins ($7; amazon.com)

• Kerastase Resistance Volumifique Mousse ($80; amazon.com)

Jameela Jamil Posted a Close-Up Photo of Her Boob Stretch Marks for Everyone to See

– health.com

Body positivity is basically Jameela Jamil's middle name. She's made it her job to take down celebs who promote weight-loss products like detox teas and appetite suppressants, and she always celebrates natural bodies of all shapes and sizes. Her latest Instagram post is celebrating something all women have: stretch marks, specifically boob stretch marks.

"I have stretch marks all over my body and I hereby rename them all Babe Marks," The Good Place actress captioned a photo of herself tanning topless. "They are a sign my body dared to take up extra space in a society that demands our eternal thinness. They are my badge of honour for resisting society’s weaponizing of the female form."

RELATED: Jameela Jamil Just Revealed She Has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome—Here’s What to Know About the Rare Condition

Preach, Jameela! Stretch marks are a natural part of life, and in our opinion, they're beautiful.

Jamil isn't the first celeb to get candid about stretch marks. Chrissy Teigen posted a photo of her stretch marks on Instagram with the caption, "Stretchies say hi!" Reese Witherspoon also opened up in an interview with Vanity Fair about bodily changes after pregnancy, and stretch marks was one of them, of course.

Jamil also threw in a P.S. about sunscreen at the end of her caption: "My face is white because I wear spf 100 sunscreen like a boss," she wrote.

Again, girl knows what she's doing. "A good sunscreen really is the best anti-aging cream you can buy—far better than any fancy department store serum," Robert Anolik, MD, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at NYU School of Medicine, previously told Health.

There you have it, just another example of Jamil being a body-positivity hero. She never disappoints.

7 Ways to Regrow Thinning Hair, According to Dermatologists

– health.com

[brightcove:5522558636001 default]

Maybe at first you notice extra hair going down the drain in the shower or more strands than usual left behind on your hairbrush. While you might feel like the only woman facing this, the surprising truth is female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is a lot more common than you think. In fact, half of all women will suffer hair loss at some point in their lives, and 40% will experience FPHL by the age of about 40. And there's a good chance those stats are off, says Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, because women are often too embarrassed to talk about it.

A common hair loss myth is that women lose their hair for the same reasons as men. “But FPHL does not have the same pattern as male pattern hair loss,” says Francesca J. Fusco, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. “It tends to be diffuse or frontal or temporal, and it can be inherited through female relatives.” While male pattern hair loss has been much more researched than women’s, we do know that it’s at least in part genetic and related to the androgen hormones, mainly dihydrotestosterone (DHT). In other words, there are several causes of hair loss besides genes, including stress, diet, and other lifestyle factors.

While we can’t control our genes, we can control our lifestyle. Making these expert-recommended changes may help your thinning hair regrow.

Stress less

“Significant psychosocial stresses can result in hair loss,” explains Dr. Zeichner. In a phenomenon called telogen effluvium, stress shocks hairs to move into the "resting" phase, in which they all fall out at once. "This is the same type of condition that women typically experience after they give birth or after a major surgical procedure," Dr. Zeichner explains. "These patients typically develop rapid thinning of the hair along the temples.” Finding stress management techniques is key, whether it’s meditation, yoga, hitting the gym, or adopting a mantra.

Watch what you eat

“Protein is critical to healthy hair,” Dr. Fusco says. “Lean meat, fish, poultry and beans are all great sources. Iron is also important; low iron can lead to anemia, which can lead to increased hair shedding. The great news is that with proper diet and supplementation, this type of hair loss is reversible.” Deficiencies in biotin and zinc are also clearly associated with hair loss, and magnesium is necessary for healthy hair growth.

Try a supplement

Taking a natural vitamin supplement that is designed to boost hair growth can help, and even multivitamins can give your hair a boost, says Dr. Zeichner. The two most popular hair supplements on the market that have been evaluated and shown to help promote healthy hair are Nutrafol ($88; amazon.com) and Viviscal ($130 for 180 tablets; amazon…

The 3 Keys to Healthy Aging After 40, According to Cameron Diaz

– health.com

"Around my 40th birthday, I started thinking about what it means to age," Cameron Diaz writes in the introduction to her latest work, The Longevity Book ($28; amazon.com). Inspired to learn more about how the passage of time affects our bodies, she began traveling the country to consult with top medical experts on the subject. What she learned? It's the simple things in life that have the greatest effects as we grow older: "Eating nutritious foods, moving often, and getting enough rest are the keys to healthy aging," she concludes. In the excerpt below, Diaz describes her ideal formula for a "most perfect" day.

I wake up rested from a night of sleep and dreams. The first thing I do is make my bed, smoothing the covers down with purpose, because this is one of the rituals that, for me, marks the beginning of a bright new day. After I brush my teeth, I'll drink a liter of water, and then I'll meditate for 20 minutes, because it relaxes my body and brain, putting me in a calm, energetic state. Then it's time for food, some protein and some carbs and some fat—perhaps a piece of avocado toast or a bowl of savory oatmeal. After that, I work out. This whole routine takes about an hour and 15 minutes from start to finish, and the balance of its components—rest, nutrition, and movement—is what I have found to be the perfect formula for getting me energized, excited, and ready for the day ahead.

RELATED: 10 Secrets of People Who Age Gracefully

Throughout my day, I try to be conscious of my food intake and my movement. How I feel is a good indicator of whether or not I've given myself adequate rest, nutrition, and activity. If I'm active without getting enough food, I'll feel depleted. If I eat too much and move too little, my stomach will hurt or I will feel slow and weighted down. If I move throughout the day, and I fuel that movement with consistent healthy snacks, my energy stays up.

I eat dinner on the earlier side, because I don't like to go to sleep with a full stomach. In the evening it is time to reverse that energy flow and start to wind down. So I avoid heavy foods before bedtime. I make sure my room is nice and dark. I keep all those electronics and their blinking blue and green and red lights out of my sleeping space. I create the best setting for rest I can give myself, so that I'll have energy for the next day. And in the morning, I wake up, and the process begins again.

RELATED: 17 Ways to Age-Proof Your Brain

Of course this perfect day is imaginary, because no day is perfect. But any day that I can implement some version of this formula is a better day than the ones I can't. If I don't sleep well, if I miss breakfast or eat something that looked rich and delicious on a menu but turns out to be tooooo rich and delicious, if I miss my workout because I have a stack of meetings that seem more pressing at the moment—well, I suffer for it, just as we all suffer for choosing not to take care of ourselves…

The Exact Skincare Products Victoria Beckham Uses Every Day for Glowing Skin

– health.com

She's a fashion and beauty icon, retired member of the Spice Girls, wife to soccer hunk David Beckham, and is known for her serious smirk and stylish lob. What we really want to know, though, is how Victoria Beckham always has such a dewy complexion, whether she's attending an awards show or running errands with her kids like any other mum.

Sadly, Beckham's radiant glow isn't thanks to a cold splash of water or cheap drugstore products. Australian celebrity facialist Melanie Grant just revealed a full breakdown of Beckham's morning and nighttime skincare routine on Instagram, including the exact products she uses. Unsurprisingly, many of her picks are on the pricey side. The good news? A few of Beckham's go-tos are under $50 and can be scooped up online.

In the morning, Beckham washes her face with CosMedix Purity Solution ($35; dermstore.com), a cleansing oil packed with olive, moringa, kukui, and argan oils to gently break down dirt, excess oil, and makeup. Next, she applies iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum ($148; amazon.com), a powerful formula with vitamin C, olive leaf extract, and vitamins E and A to reduce inflammation and prevent breakouts (Beckham has been very open about her struggle with acne in the past).

Another antioxidant serum she loves is SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF ($166; dermstore.com), a blend of pure vitamin C and ferulic acid to neutralize free radicals, prevent aging, and improve discoloration. If Beckham's pick is too expensive, though, we love these more affordable antioxidant serums: Sunday Riley Juno Antioxidant + Superfood Face Oil ($72; sephora.com) and Cosmetic Skin Solutions LLC Phloretin Serum ($40; amazon.com), both of which help to protect skin from free radicals and slow down signs of aging.

After her antioxidant serum, Beckham tackles dark circles and undereye puffiness with CosMedix Eye Genius ($70; dermstore.com). She then applies Augustinus Bader The Cream ($160; neimanmarcus.com), a light moisturizer, and layers SPF 50 over her face as a finishing touch. Unfortunately, you won't be able to get your hands on Beckham's sunscreen, as she uses a customized formula—but some of our favorites with similar coverage are Neutrogena, EltaMD, and Coola.

At night, Beckham double cleanses, first using the same CosMedix Purity Solution from her morning routine, then following up with CosMedix Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser ($26; walmart.com), which contains L-Lactic acid to exfoliate and de-clog pores. She then applies Biologique Recherche P50 lotion and CosMedix Elite Serum 24 ($121; walmart…

There's a Reason Certain Noises Drive You Crazy, and It's Called Misophonia

Growing up, my mom and I got along really well, but I'll admit, there was one thing she did that always drove me absolutely crazy: swallow water, or any beverage for that matter. OK, to clarify, it wasn't the fact that she drank water that annoyed me (I of course wanted her to drink it to live), it was the sound she made when she swallowed that I couldn't stand…that glug glug sound that came from her throat as she gulped down a glass.

That sound made me straight-up angry. Seriously, it got so bad that I would ask my mom to tell me before she took a drink so I could leave the room while she did. For the longest time I thought I had weird anger issues, but I recently learned I'm not the only one who has a problem with certain sounds. In fact, there's even a name for it.

RELATED: This Woman Woke Up With a Rare Condition That Makes Her Unable to Hear Men’s Voices

It's called misophonia, and it's characterized by an intense emotional rage in response to specific everyday sounds that other people make, Don Vaughn, PhD, a neuroscientist at UCLA, tells Health. Many of the sounds that drive people crazy come from the mouth, like chewing, breathing, or swallowing. But other things, like sniffling, pen-clicking, or humming, can also make people extremely irritated.

Misophonia is still new to the medical world (it only got its name a few years ago), which means there hasn't been much research done on this disorder that some experts call "sound rage." No one is really sure what causes misophonia, but, Vaughn says, "Every sound, smell, and sight that goes into your system, your brain works very hard to process it and to correlate it with something in your life, whether it's a good thing or a bad thing. Your brain is this automatic association machine, so sometimes it just gets the associations wrong or sort of negatively miswired."

One thing that distinguishes misophonia from other sound-related disorders is that it's triggered by repetitive, everyday sounds as opposed to other sounds, Vaughn says. For example, word aversion is when a person has an intense reaction to a certain word, like moist or crevice, but misophonia is related to sounds, not words. Another thing that sets misophonia apart: The reaction is rage instead of fear, he adds. Phonophobia is the name for a fear of sounds.

RELATED: Your Ultimate Guide to Healthy Ears

Misophonia isn't yet listed as an official diagnosis in any medical manuals, so there isn't a set criteria for diagnosing it, although there are various online questionnaries that will help you get an idea of whether you might have the disorder.

If you think you have misophonia, you should consult your primary care physician about your options. They'll likely refer you to an audiolosist who can help you move forward with treatment, which usually involves sound therapy and counseling to learn how to redirect your attention away from trigger sounds…

Julia Roberts Got a Gorgeous New Haircut That Everyone Is Freaking Out About

– health.com

Julia Roberts just got a major hair refresh — and we’re loving it.

The Academy Award-winning actress, 51, chopped her signature long waves into a textured shoulder-length lob that the internet can’t get enough of.

With the help of longtime hairstylist Serge Normant, Roberts said goodbye to what looks to be at least four inches of hair. While the actress hasn’t shown off her fresh style just yet, Normant debuted the chop on his Instagram.

The hairstylist simply captioned a shot of her hair from the side: “@juliaroberts ️ new ️#sergenormant.” Normant, Roberts’ longtime stylist, is responsible for many of her most iconic looks – including the long, glossy waves she wore to the Oscars in February, her last public appearance before chopping off her locks. The two are so close that when we asked Roberts her beauty mantra, she told PEOPLE it was “Call Serge!”

Other stars are already giving Roberts tons of praise about her haircut. Sarah Jessica Parker wrote in the comments, “Gorgeous!!!!X.” Heidi Klum also loves her look and said, “️.”

“Such a great cut!!” Roberts’ fashion stylist Elizabeth Stewart also said.

The actress showed off her last eye-catching hair change shortly after Halloween — and she revealed it wasn’t exactly intended to last as long as it did. Roberts’ golden blonde hue ombréd down to a pastel semi-faded pink color at her ends during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that didn’t completely wash out after she went trick-or-treating with her kids.

“I was a flamingo,” the star said as she pointed to her hair.

“Oh you weren’t kidding around!” Kimmel replied.

“About four to six weeks!” Roberts told Kimmel of how long the dye would last in her hair. Kimmel then asked, “Is that why you have pink hair?”

“Yeah! I had a lot more last night but…I thought there would be a lot less right now,” she said with a laugh.

The Exact Anti-Aging Products That Helped Heal Years of Sun Damage on This Woman's Face

– health.com

If you've ever sat out in the sun for a little too long and didn't reapply sunscreen, you may have developed sun damage, which can show up in the form of uneven pigmentation, dark freckles, and melasma. And, as you know, sun damage is super hard to get rid of.

Reddit user NeverMeant125 is breaking the Internet with a before-and-after photo of her sun damage treatment, and it's easy to see why: We all want to know how she's doing the impossible. Luckily, she shares the exact routine that totally transformed her damaged skin, giving her a drastically brighter, smoother complexion.

She begins her viral post with a side-by-side image of her skin: The photo on the left is her face at age 23 or 24, while the one on the right is what her skin currently looks like at almost 28 years old. "These two pictures are four years apart," she writes. "The only makeup I’m wearing in both photos in mascara."

RELATED: The Exact Vitamin C Serum That Gives Lady Gaga Her Incredible Glow

In high school and college, NeverMeant125 says, she tanned regularly and never wore sunscreen or moisturizer. As a result, she developed sun damage. "The texture of my skin was awful because it was so dry," she shares.

Four years ago, she decided to address her melasma along with her skin texture and unevenness. "When I started my skincare routine about 4 years ago I never anticipated my freckles going away," NeverMeant125 says. If she could get back some of her freckles without the sun damage, she would in a heartbeat, she adds. "The ones that I still have are the ones that I had as a kid." She doesn't believe those were caused by sun damage, however the freckles in the photo on the left that she's treated were caused by too much sun exposure.

Her morning routine consists of washing her face with CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser ($11; amazon.com), followed by Silk Naturals Facelift Vitamin C, DMAE & Peptide serum ($18; silknaturals.com). Afterward, she applies First Aid Beauty 5 in 1 Face Cream with SPF 30 ($40; amazon.com), which contains zinc oxide to protect from UV rays.

At night, she cleanses again with CeraVe, then alternates between smoothing Silk Naturals AHA Toner ($9; silknaturals.com) and MUAC Retinol ($13; makeupartistschoice.com) over her face. Unlike many retinols, she likes this one because it's not over-drying, and she's careful to only use it every other evening. Get Your Heart Pumping With This HIIT Jump Rope Circuit From Kira Stokes

– health.com

Raise your hand if you used to jump rope as a kid. Now raise your hand if you still do. No? Well, if you’re looking to transform your body, it’s time to pick that jump rope back up. Here’s why: It will get your heart pumping, torch mega calories, and improve your coordination and agility. Plus, it can be used to tone from head to toe. “This circuit is a form of HIIT; you are constantly switching gears and asking your body to adjust to challenges of strength training, using a rope,” says Kira Stokes, a celebrity trainer and creator of the Stoked Method, who designed and demoed this workout exclusively for Health readers. “It’s not going to be comfortable the first time you jump or the 10th time, but embrace it. You have to get uncomfortable to change.” Stay committed, says Stokes, and you’ll reap the rewards in as little as three to four weeks.

Strength circuit 1

Repeat 3x without rest.

Rope overhead squat

Stand with feet slightly wider than hip-width apart and arms straight out in front of you at shoulder height, a folded rope (handles together) in hands. Pull rope taut, so that hands are slightly wider than hip-width (A). Keeping shoulders down and back, raise rope overhead as you sit down into a squat (B). Drive up from heels and engage glutes to return to “A.” Do 15 reps.

Reverse lunge with rope rotation

Start with feet hip-width apart and arms out in front of you at shoulder height, a folded rope (handles together) in hands. Pull rope taut, so hands are slightly wider than hip-width (A). Step back with right foot, lowering right knee until it’s about 1–2 inches from the ground, forming 90-degree angles with legs, while rotating torso to left (B). Return to “A” and then repeat on other side; continue alternating. Do 10–12 reps per leg.

Panther rope core stabilization

Start on all fours with hands underneath shoulders and knees slightly wider than hips and a folded rope (handles together) in a straight line, anchored under your hands. Lift knees two inches off the ground, and grab the rope with left hand and begin to pull. Remember: The rope will not move as it’s anchored to the ground with your right hand…

The 'Skinny Bitch Collective' Is Under Fire for Using Locals as Props in Kenya Workouts

– health.com

A workout program that's been dubbed one of the most "exclusive" fitness classes on the planet has the internet outraged. Skinny Bitch Collective (the name really says it all, doesn't it?) held an invite-only retreat in Kenya, and over the weekend, videos surfaced of students using native Maasai tribesmen as literal props during one of the workouts.

Multiple videos that were posted to Instagram show about 10 women (all of whom appear to be white and are very tall and thin) working out with the Maasai tribesmen standing as a backdrop, doing a traditional dance, or posting up as obstacles for the women to crawl around.

The Instagram account @diet_prada posted the videos and wrote: "It’s 2019 and apparently people still haven’t learned that POC/ethnic groups don’t exist to embellish already privileged lives. The Colonial mindset is alive and well."

RELATED: This New Trend Has Gone Viral on Instagram—but It's Actually Dangerous to Your Mental Health

Needless to say, the internet is having none of SBC's ignorance. One user commented, "As an African woman I am tired of seeing my people relegated to play in the background. As a Kenyan woman it enrages me to see my people being used as PROPS, being ridiculed in his posts, being used to be their personal 'cheerleaders,' asking them to perform their traditional jump/dance to add to the 'atmosphere' of their workouts."

Russell Bateman, the founder of Skinny Bitch Collective (SBC), reportedly posted an apology on Instagram, but his account has since been deleted. (His website is also "down for maintenance.")

Multiple outlets have reported that his apology explained the group was required to be accompanied by the tribe at all times because the retreat was taking place on the tribe's ancestral lands.

"Our intention was to promote a cross-cultural exchange through shared experiences, and to highlight the beauty of Kenya and its indigenous people," Bateman reportedly wrote, according to BuzzFeed. "We accept and understand that our content fell well short of this aim, and lacked appropriate cultural sensitivity by reinforcing colonial era stereotypes of people of color."

SBC has previously been criticized for its exclusivity and bizarre practices. As the name suggests, Bateman's targeting a *very* specific clientele—and the classes are invite-only.

After a reporter for The Cut tried the class, she wrote: "I knew that I was in the right place because, at five-foot-three, I was the shortest person in my class of 35 people. Everyone looked like girlfriends past, present, and future of Leonardo DiCaprio."

Everything You Need to Know About HIIPA: The Exercise Trend for People Who Don’t Have Time to Work Out

Everything You Need to Know About HIIPA: The Exercise Trend for People Who Don’t Have Time to Work Out

– health.com

Let’s face it: On some days, you just don't have the time to spend a full hour clocking miles on the treadmill or pumping weights at the squat rack. You already have one thousand other things on your to-do list, and unfortunately, working out doesn’t always make the cut.

We get it, and we have some good news: New research says that the exercise you do on those no-workout days (you know, when you take the stairs or carry heavy groceries) might be more beneficial than you think.

RELATED: Please Move More, Even Just a Little Bit, Say New Physical Activity Guidelines

Say hello to HIIPA, or high-intensity incidental physical activity. It’s a version of HIIT (high-intensity interval training) that you already do as you go about your everyday life, no gym needed. Last year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) updated the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans to say that physical activity no longer has to last at least 10 minutes to be beneficial. The new thinking is that every bit of activity counts, even if it’s just two minutes at a time.

So what kind of activity qualifies as HIIPA? According to a report published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine this week, HIIPA is any movement you make that gets your heart rate up—such as vacuuming every room in your house, chasing your kids around the backyard, parking your car in a faraway spot and having to walk a few minutes to your office door, and lugging a heavy load of laundry to the laundromat.

Instead of thinking you have to block out an hour of your day to get your blood pumping, you can treat the things you’re already doing as built-in bites of exercise.

RELATED: Transform Your Core With This No-Equipment 10-Minute Ab Workout

"There is a lot of research telling us that any type of HIIT, irrespective of the duration and number of repetitions, is one of the most effective ways to rapidly improve fitness and cardiovascular health and HIIPA works on the same idea," Emmanuel Stamatakis, PhD, lead author on the report, said in a statement.

The report also says that one of the great things about HIIPA is that it does away with the usual obstacles that hold people back from making exercise a regular part of their routine—like the high price of gym memberships, not having enough time, and simply lacking the skills and motivation.

HIIPA is gaining popularity at just the right time, considering many Americans just aren’t meeting the current guidelines, which call for adults to complete 150 to 300 minutes of moderate physical activity, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity, per week. Only 26% of men and 19% of women are meeting that benchmark, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association last year with the updated physical activity guidelines.

“The new guidelines demonstrate that, based on the best science, everyone can dramatically improve their health just by moving—anytime, anywhere, and by any means that gets you active,” said Admiral Brett P…

What Does It Really Mean to Be Happy? 6 Experts Explain

When you go to your “happy place,” you might picture yourself relaxing on a beach in Bali, fitting back into a pair of favorite old jeans, or landing that promotion you’ve been gunning for. But here’s the thing: Elation, achievement, and success aren’t the same as the warm and fuzzy feelings of happiness—and mixing them up may actually bum you out. That’s why we endeavored to learn what happiness really means, by interviewing a handful of people who have devoted years of their lives to studying it. Read about what their research and real-life experience has taught them; then use their wisdom and advice to boost your own joy. (Spoiler alert: Those old jeans will do more good in the giveaway bin.)

“Happiness isn’t something you feel. It’s something you do.”

I used to think I had a clear idea of what happiness looks like. I came to the U.S. at 13. My family emigrated from Russia, and we lived outside of Detroit. It was a really rough time, especially because I didn’t speak English. I was overwhelmed with anxiety and self-doubt. The only time I felt OK was when I achieved anything—the day I was moved from remedial English, the day I moved out of the projects.

I thought, “This is how I’m going to be happy: I’m going to achieve things.” I lived my life with this attitude. I’ll be happy when I get into a good college. When I graduate. When I move to New York. When I get married. When I’m able to take care of my family…

I was always proud of my achievements, yet the happiness bubble would eventually pop. I thought I wasn’t doing enough to gain the privilege of feeling good, but I hit a wall, burned out, and couldn’t push anymore.

When I stumbled onto research about gratitude nine years ago, I thought it was a bunch of BS. Saying three things I was grateful for would make me happy? Ridiculous. If I was grateful for everything, I wouldn’t work for anything. Still, I decided to do a 30-day experiment. I told my husband and daughter that each day, I’d write down something I was grateful for and say “thank you” to someone at least once.

RELATED: Here’s How Feeling Grateful Can Improve Your Life

The punch line is obvious. I noticed a difference right away. It’s not like I became a happy-go-lucky person, but I started to find joy in small, everyday moments. Tiny things, like my daughter running up to give me a hug. Coming into my living room and noticing the light hitting a vase of tulips. Even driving to work in minimal traffic and suddenly enjoying the commute.

Before I began practicing gratitude, I wasn’t present for those moments. I only stepped on them before running away. Happiness, I now realize, is not something you feel, but something you do. We don’t have to earn it, or be “good enough…

What inspired you to write about the power of decluttering?

Your space reflects you. It projects your identity to the world. If you look around and everything you own is useful or beloved, you may feel more integrated with yourself.

Any advice for getting started?

Adopt the one-minute rule. Anything you can do in less than a minute, do without delay. Throw away a wrapper. File an email. Hang up your coat. That will get rid of that scum of clutter on the surface of life. And over time, you start to see a big difference.

RELATED: I Tried Marie Kondo's Tidying Up Method—and It Had a Serious Impact on My Happiness

Once you’ve cleared the clutter, then what?

It’s not enough to get rid of stuff that’s dragging us down; we also need things that lift us up. We want to be delighted in our spaces. You can add whatever you want to your space to make it beautiful—just choose those things purposefully.

What else do you do to feel happier?

Relationships are most important to me. I’m in four book groups because I love to see friends and I love books. I also have this habit with my sister and parents called “update”: About once a week, we send a super-boring email about whatever’s going on, just to make ourselves feel more connected.

What’s your morning routine like?

The first thing I do is kiss my husband. He’s usually still asleep, but I’m like, “I want to kiss my husband before I check my phone.” Then most days I go for a long walk in Central Park. It’s exercise, it’s nature, it’s light on my face resetting my circadian rhythm. It’s the greatest thing.

How about when you’re feeling blue—how do you recover?

Do 10 jumping jacks! I tell my daughters this all the time. Or run down the stairs. It makes you feel goofy and energized.

This 6-Step Yoga Flow Will Open Up Your Tight Hips

– health.com

On average, we sit for about 12 hours every day. “Yikes” is right. “Whether it’s at a desk or in the car, when people sit for most of the day, they may develop tight hip flexors. These muscles attach to the lumbar spine and could create lower-back pain when they are shortened,” explains physical therapist Erica Anne Meloe, owner of Velocity Physiotherapy in New York City and author of Why Do I Hurt?

So what can you do to help those suffering hip muscles? First, make sure you’re getting up and walking around throughout the day—researchers suggest at least once every 30 minutes. But to further help, try this hip-opening sequence created specifically for Health readers by Peloton yoga instructor Kristin McGee. “These poses take a 360-degree approach, helping to stretch and strengthen the hips from all angles—front, side, and back,” says McGee.

Run through them three to four times a week, and you’ll feel so much looser.

Woman Contracts Rare Autoimmune Disease From Touching Stray Cat: 'I'll Have It for Life'

Even after contracting a life-altering syndrome from a feral cat she befriended on vacation, Gemma Birch still considers herself an animal lover.

The 25-year-old from Southport, England, was spending a week in Albufeira, Portugal, in June 2015 when she took in a “gorgeous” stray cat who would lounge on the patio of the rental apartment, Birch recalls to PEOPLE.

Immediately smitten, Birch began giving the animal milk from a bowl and letting her inside.

“She obviously loved me, and she’d follow me everywhere,” says Birch, who runs a lifestyle blog and works in a gym. “I was fine all week. I was so sad to leave her.”

But on the last night, she started vomiting severely and suffering from diarrhea. On the plane ride home, on top of her existing symptoms, Birch started to feel faint.

By the time she landed, her stomach was so swollen she looked “nine months pregnant,” she says. “Like I was about to burst.”

She made it home, where her father immediately told her she needed to go to the hospital because she was so weak and pale, Birch recalls.

After spending a week in the ICU and undergoing many tests, doctors discovered Birch had been infected with campylobacter, a common cause of food poisoning.

RELATED: Woman Dies from Rabies After She Was Misdiagnosed With Panic Attacks

Doctors asked if she’d eaten any uncooked poultry. A staunch vegetarian, Birch said no. Then they asked if she had come into contact with any animals recently, and she remembered her feline friend.

Next came more tests, which helped the medical team discover that she had contracted the infection from a living animal.

“Once they found out, they weren’t worried. They said I’d get better at home with bedrest,” Birch recalls. “But I got worse. I couldn’t walk. I kept falling and losing my balance.”

Her symptoms, inconsistent food poisoning, led Birch to make repeated appointments with her general practitioner, who kept telling her to just get more rest.

“Eventually I stopped going because I felt like I was bugging them,” Birch says. “But you just know when it’s something else.”

Then, two weeks after leaving the hospital — three weeks after returning from Portugal — Birch woke up around 3 a.m. because she’d fallen out of bed.

“I couldn’t feel my legs on the sheets or my feet on the carpet,” she explains. “I started scratching my legs so hard that they bled, but I still couldn’t feel it. I screamed for my dad, and he took me to the hospital.”

In the emergency room, Birch says she googled her symptoms and the campylobacter bacteria, which turned up three words: Guillain-Barré syndrome…

15 Transformations That'll Inspire You to Start Lifting Weights

Stacey D.

In two years, Stacey went from CrossFit obsessed (left) to entering into the world of powerlifting and counting macros (right). She lost 15 pounds and about 5 percent body fat, but not overnight. "Understanding that this whole fitness thing is a lifelong journey really helps me understand that there's ups, downs, weekends of eating it all, weeks of consistency, fat days, 'damn who dat' when you look in the mirror days, and overall a lot of learning and self-encouragement, forgiveness and love," she wrote.

The now-trainer and Insta star used to find weights intimidating so she stuck to cardio classes. But once she picked up a dumbbell, she realized the body she wanted couldn't be achieved with light lifting. "My 'gains' came very slowly, compared to many. It took me a really long time to start doing full push-ups (especially darn triceps ones)," she writes. This photo—and Katie's story—are proof that if you can get past intimidation and frustrations, hard work will pay off eventually.

Kathryn Nash started reaching for dumbbells as finishers for her BBG workouts, but pretty soon, the weights became her favorite part of the workout. After ditching HIIT to go all in with lifting, it took almost a year for Kathryn to build up her backside. "This took me a solid year of bulking to build the muscle I currently have. Don't be afraid to lift heavy and EAT, ladies!!! You can't grow if you neglect either of them. Muscle growth takes time and a whole lot of patience, but it is so worth it. Gainz are nice and all, but nothing beats the adrenaline rush you get from lifting heavy a$$ iron," she says.

Over the past four years, the Canadian fitfluencer has built her booty with a mix of heavy lifting four times a week and strategic cardio. "A structured weightlifting routine that has you progressively doing 'more' over time will deliver the best and most predictable results," she writes.

This Is the Legging Trend You'll Be Seeing Everywhere in 2019

– health.com

The biggest legging trend for 2019 will look pretty familiar to anyone who lived in Adidas track pants back in the '90s.

Workout tights that take a cue from the brand's iconic tri-color side stripe are everywhere right now. And while the original is still cool, we're also seeing lots of leggings that have a refreshed take on the classic style—think side stripes on modern fabrics, over eye-catching prints, and paired with other trendy features like mesh panels or colorblocking. We're guessing some of the stripe-y bottoms below will soon be popping up at your gym or next SoulCycle class; add them to your cart now before they're gone.

Updated classics

Left: The beloved Adidas 3-Stripe Tights ($40; nordstrom.com) has a lean-but-not-too-tight fit that's perfect for low-impact workouts or just lazing on the couch. Center: With its waistband logo, compression fabric, and pearlized finish, the Koral Rhys Mid Rise Energy Legging ($125; koral.com) delivers a high-performance take on the trend. Right: For crazy soft comfort, you can't go wrong with Champion; their Women's Track Pant ($50; champion.com) has a subtle side stripe and is available in both black and millennial pink.

Sleek neutrals

Left: Shimmering stripes snake around the leg in the Ivy Park Metallic Asymmetrical Stripe Legging ($90; nordstrom.com). Center: With velvet stripes and insulating fabric, the Sweaty Betty Thermodynamic Run Legging ($135; sweatybetty.com) is designed to keep you warm during cold-weather workouts. Right: You never need to sacrifice quality for price when it comes to Old Navy activewear. The High-Rise 7/8-Length Side-Stripe Yoga Legging ($28; oldnavy.com) comes in a deep purplish hue that's surprisingly versatile.

Multicolor stripes

Left: Part of Bandier's just-launched All Access sets, the Floyd Legging ($118; bandier.com) makes a statement paired with the matching Floyd Crop Top. Center: With mesh cutouts and candy-colored stripes, the Lorna Jane Nexus Core Tight ($111; lornajane.com) lets you embrace two popular trends in one. Right: The seriously cool P.E. Nation Crossbar Legging ($150; carbon38.com) has a seven-color stripe on one side and solid green colorblock on the other—so you can rock different looks from every angle.

Stripes + patterns

Left: A solid black side stripe balances out the tropical, surf-inspired pattern on the Nike Hurley Hanoi Legging ($68; nike.com). Center: The Athleta Contender Blossom 7/8 Tight ($89; athleta.com) will have you dreaming of spring with its sweet floral pattern and unexpected navy stripe. Right: Hate wearing the same leggings as everyone else in your spin class? The Upside Good Dinosaur NYC Pant ($99; carbon38.com) is the answer.

Halle Berry Just Posted a Bikini Selfie Wearing Her Favorite Anti-Aging Mask

– health.com

Is seemingly ageless skin just too much to ask for? Clearly. But if you've seen photos of actress Halle Berry recently, you'll be convinced that she's stumbled upon the answer. What is the 52-year-old's secret to her gorgeous complexion?

Berry leads an active, healthy lifestyle (including regular boxing workouts and following the keto diet), which surely helps boost her skin's health from within. But if you've wondered which topical treatments she uses to achieve that famous glow, you're in luck. The actress just posted a selfie where she raved about her favorite anti-aging product: a creamy, white anti-aging mask from Olga Lorencin. (Former Bachelor star Ashley Iaconetti is also a fan of the brand.)

"Treat Ya Self Tuesday," she captioned the post. "When in doubt, face masks are EVERYTHING. I personally love @olgalorencinskincare’s ageless mask." Um, where's our invite to Berry's spa day?

Berry's favorite anti-aging treatment is actually a two-step overnight process. Step one is a peel that gently exfoliates for a bright, glowing complexion; step two is a hydrating sleep mask that plumps and illuminates skin.

This winning combination firms skin, minimizes pores and wrinkles, and helps even out pigmentation.

To buy: $98; dermstore.com

The formula boasts powerful ingredients like succinic acid (a natural plant-based exfoliant) and phytomoist (a moisturizer made from mushrooms). It's also packed with ferulic acid, allantoin, and arginine, which work to neutralize free radicals and prevent damage, calm redness and decrease inflammation, improve skin texture (bye, wrinkles and enlarged pores), and boost hydration.

If you have lackluster skin, you can use this treatment on your face, neck, and décolleté two to three times a week. It works well on all skin types, including sensitive skin.

The best news? Berry's anti-aging face mask isn't exclusive to A-listers. You can pick up Olga Lorencin Skin Care Ageless Facial in a Box online for $98 at dermstore.com or $78 at qvc.com, and get the actress's signature glow overnight.

This Woman Shared Her Cystic Acne Transformation and the Quick Fix That Actually Worked

– health.com

If you're tuned into skin-care forums, then you know that the brand Drunk Elephant has a wide stan base. People are loving the fact that the products' ingredient lists are stacked with acids, peptides, vitamins, etc., but free of what the company calls the "Suspicious 6."

One mega fan, Lisa Paddock, recently wrote an Instagram post about her experience with the brand, revealing how the products cleared her acne and, in turn, boosted her self-esteem.

RELATED: This Teen Is Claiming Green Tea Cleared Her Cystic Acne in Viral Tweet

In her caption, she opened up about a recent mental health struggle that affected "just about every facet" of her life. She was barely making enough money to pay her bills, was in a toxic relationship, and had been dealing with depression and anxiety since she was 12, she tells Shape.

To add insult to injury, she started getting acne for the first time in her 20s. (Yay, mysterious adult acne.) "After I turned 25, my skin completely changed," she says. At first, it was the occasional breakout, but then she started getting painful cystic acne. She tried OTC products, prescription products, and changing her diet, but they didn't help.

Paddock dove into more research and decided to give Drunk Elephant a try after reading reviews. (ICYMI, the company finally launched a retinol cream this month.) She had quick results that cleared up her acne and boosted her confidence, she explained in her recent Instagram.

"Within a month my skin had changed drastically and just kept improving with each day of consistent use," Paddock wrote in her recent Instagram post. "The most beautiful part though is that as my skin cleared and healed, so did my soul. The better I began to feel about my skin, the better I felt inside. Some people may think it’s ridiculous to say skin care is a form of mental health self-care, but for me, that is exactly what Drunk Elephant is!"

If that statement has you ready to drink the Kool-Aid, you can copy Paddock's routine product-for-product.

Morning: She mixes one pump each of: 1 pump of B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum ($52, sephora.com); 1 pump of C-Firma Day Serum ($80, sephora.com); 1 pump of Protini Polypeptide Cream ($68; sephora.com); 2 to 3 drops of Virgin Marula Luxury Face Oil ($72, sephora.com). (Drunk Elephant advocates mixing its products together to create a "cocktail.")

Then she'll apply C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream ($64, sephora.com) followed by a teaspoon of either Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Sunscreen ($36, sephora.com) or Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense Sunscreen ($34, sephora.com) mixed with a half pump of D Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops ($36, sephora.com).

The Only Anti-Aging Serum That Actually Banished My Forehead Wrinkles

– health.com

One day in my late teens, I looked in the mirror and noticed deep lines starting to appear across my forehead. I quickly realized that I’d never appreciated having smooth and wrinkle-free skin until that moment, and because of my fairly young age, I knew this was just the beginning. So I hurried to the nearest beauty store to look for a fix—I was determined to find an over-the-counter product that could give me the best possible results.

When I explained my problem to the saleswoman, she immediately led me to Dermalogica’s Age Smart Multivitamin Power Serum ($69; dermstore.com or ulta.com). At first, I’ll admit, I was turned off by the price tag—but the saleswoman was adamant about how well the serum worked (and I was sort of desperate) so I decided to give it a shot. Little did I know at the time, this serum would become my go-to product and a godsend for my forehead lines over the years.

Since then, I’ve tried quite a few alternatives—both drugstore and luxury brands—and I’ve yet to find one that works as well on my forehead lines as the Dermalogica serum. It comes in a .75-ounce tube, but a little goes a long way, so I only have to purchase it a few times a year. Every time I use the cream overnight, I wake up with my skin feeling soft, smooth, and hydrated, which is an added plus during the harsh New York City winters I experience each year. As someone with acne-prone skin, I have to be wary of serums that are too thick or oily, but I’ve used this cream all over my face and haven’t had a breakout from it yet.

RELATED: The Best Over-the-Counter Retinol Creams, According to Dermatologists

If my skin’s feeling particularly tired and dehydrated after a late night out or a long day at work, I slather on even more of the cream and let it work its magic. With antioxidants like vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E included in the ingredients, it’s no surprise that it feels amazing on my skin. And while I can definitely feel the product after I apply it, it doesn’t get heavy, greasy, or sticky—in fact, it’s more like a protective shell that hardens slightly after it dries. I usually opt to wash my face the morning after I use it, though it easily comes off with just water.

According to customer reviews, I’m not the only one who’s completely satisfied with this purchase. “I started using this about two months ago and I'm obsessed,” said one reviewer. “It has evened out my uneven skin tone, reduced the wrinkles around my eyes and lips, and overall has made my skin look amazing considering I was a child of the '60s and laid out in the sun everyday with no sunscreen until at least the late '90s. I'm so thankful to Dermalogica for making this awesome serum. I've tried so many ‘miracle’ products and this is the only one that has done what it said. I'm in love.”

Another customer called this anti-aging serum “magic in a tube” and said, “I love that you only need a little…

Chocolate Lilac Hair Is the Perfect Trend for Brunettes to Try This Season

Chocolate lilac hair is here, and it's slowly but surely taking over the world. OK, maybe that's a little dramatic, but seriously—this trend is everywhere, and for good reason. Letting whimsical strands of light purple float through a rich brunette mane is the perfect combination of playful and put-together. It's unique, but not over the top. Classy, but not boring.

There are countless different ways to do this look. You can dial up the purple, giving your strands more of an electric feel, or opt for a lighter shade, giving you the fairy crown you deserve. There's no right or wrong when it comes to a chocolate lilac mane.

RELATED: 7 Hair Color Trends That Are Going to Be Huge in 2019

Before you hop on the trend, it's important you know how to care for newly dyed hair. Shampooing your hair too often can cause colored hair to fade quickly, so pick up a formula that will help retain your color, like R+Co Gemstone ($24, amazon.com) or Oribe Shampoo for Beautiful Color ($46, amazon.com).

Below, we've rounded up seven of our favorite chocolate lilac looks. Take these to the salon for inspiration, or use them to imagine your own version of this style. No matter what brunette-purple combo you choose, you're guaranteed a head-turning look.

This Woman Woke Up With a Rare Condition That Makes Her Unable to Hear Men’s Voices

Admit it: You've occasionally (or more than occasionally) wished you could hit mute on the men in your life. That wish recently came true for a woman in China, but it didn't quite happen the way it does in our dreams. She was diagnosed with a type of hearing loss that left her unable to understand low-pitched sounds, a.k.a. male voices.

According to the Daily Mail, a Chinese woman only identified by her last name, Chen, woke up one morning unable to hear her boyfriend's voice. Chen was also up vomiting the night before and started to notice a ringing in her ear then, so she knew something serious was going on.

RELATED: Your Ultimate Guide to Healthy Ears

She went to Qianpu Hospital, where an ear, nose, and throat specialist Lin Xiaoqing diagnosed her with a rare form of low-frequency hearing damage called reverse-slope hearing loss (RSHL), which prevents people from hearing low-frequency sounds.

Chen, who lives in southeastern China, is one of very few people to develop the condition. The Thigpen Hearing Center, an audiology clinic in Tennessee, states that RHSL affects only about 3,000 people in the United States and Canada. In other words, for every 12,000 cases of hearing loss, only one person has RSHL.

People with RHSL typically have no problem hearing high-frequency sounds, like voices of women and children, but they struggle to hear low-frequency noises, like vehicles, thunder, and voices over the phone.

RELATED: Gwen Stefani Ruptured Her Eardrum on a Plane—Could It Happen to You?

Dr. Xiaoqing reported Chen could hear her voice perfectly fine during the appointment, but she couldn't understand the voice of a male patient who was also at the hospital.

Many things can cause RHSL, including genetic abnormalities and certain diseases and infections. A change in the pressure of the fluid in the inner ear has also been known to be a trigger. Dr. Xiaoqing believes Chen developed the condition because of stress and a severe lack of sleep. Thankfully, Chen is expected to make a full recovery after treatment.

Surgeon Will Pay $3,000 Fine for Removing Kidney He Mistakenly Thought Was a Tumor

A Florida surgeon has agreed to pay a $3,000 fine, as well as perform hours of continued medical training, after removing a woman’s kidney during what was intended to be back surgery.

According to court records, Maureen Pacheco, who checked into Florida’s Wellington Regional Medical Center in April 2016 to have a few vertebra in her lower back fused together, was not consulted about the change of plans, the Washington Post reported.

RELATED: Man Declared Dead by Three Doctors Wakes Up Hours Before Autopsy in Spain

However, during the back procedure, surgeon Ramon Vazquez mistook her kidney for a cancerous tumor in Pacheco’s pelvis and cut it out, according to the Palm Beach Post, citing a lawsuit that had been settled in September.

A pathologist at the hospital confirmed that the tumor was actually a pelvic kidney, the Palm Beach Post reported. Pelvic kidneys refer to organs that failed “to ascend to their normal position above the waist” during fetal development, ” according to the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

In addition to the $3,000 fine, Vasquez has also agreed to complete 3 hours of continuing medical edition in how to evaluate pre-operative spinal surgical patients, as well as five hours of risk management training, according to a court documents filed by the Florida Board of Medicine on Dec. 27.

RELATED: Mom Says Doctors Performed 'Horrifying' C-Section Without Anesthesia: 'I Felt Them Cut Me Open'

Vasquez has also agreed to perform a one-hour lecture regarding wrong-site surgery “to the entire medical staff of the hospital” where he maintains staff privileges, according to the documents.

Additionally the surgeon will pay the $4,817.90 in costs the Florida Department of Health incurred while investigating and prosecuting the case.

Prior to reaching the final agreement, the Florida Board of Medicine initially rejected a settlement that carried only a $1,500 fine, according to the Palm Beach Post.

RELATED: This Woman Went to 17 Doctors Before Finally Getting the Right Diagnosis

In a statement, the surgeon’s attorney, Michael Burt told the Palm Beach Post, “Dr. Vazquez is an excellent surgeon who has been providing exemplary, often life-saving services in our community for many years. In this instance he, in collaboration with other members of the surgical team, exercised professional judgement.”

Vazquez’s attorney also told the outlet that the lawsuit “was settled on his behalf for a nominal amount,” adding that his client did not “admit liability by agreeing to this settlement.”

According to a health complaint filed by the Florida Health Department in December, the “unauthorized procedure” was “medically unnecessary” as it was “unrelated” to the lumbar fusion Pacheco was scheduled to receive that day…
