Everything You Need to Know About HIIPA: The Exercise Trend for People Who Don’t Have Time to Work Out

– health.com

Let’s face it: On some days, you just don't have the time to spend a full hour clocking miles on the treadmill or pumping weights at the squat rack. You already have one thousand other things on your to-do list, and unfortunately, working out doesn’t always make the cut.

We get it, and we have some good news: New research says that the exercise you do on those no-workout days (you know, when you take the stairs or carry heavy groceries) might be more beneficial than you think.

RELATED: Please Move More, Even Just a Little Bit, Say New Physical Activity Guidelines

Say hello to HIIPA, or high-intensity incidental physical activity. It’s a version of HIIT (high-intensity interval training) that you already do as you go about your everyday life, no gym needed. Last year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) updated the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans to say that physical activity no longer has to last at least 10 minutes to be beneficial. The new thinking is that every bit of activity counts, even if it’s just two minutes at a time.

So what kind of activity qualifies as HIIPA? According to a report published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine this week, HIIPA is any movement you make that gets your heart rate up—such as vacuuming every room in your house, chasing your kids around the backyard, parking your car in a faraway spot and having to walk a few minutes to your office door, and lugging a heavy load of laundry to the laundromat.

Instead of thinking you have to block out an hour of your day to get your blood pumping, you can treat the things you’re already doing as built-in bites of exercise.

"There is a lot of research telling us that any type of HIIT, irrespective of the duration and number of repetitions, is one of the most effective ways to rapidly improve fitness and cardiovascular health and HIIPA works on the same idea," Emmanuel Stamatakis, PhD, lead author on the report, said in a statement.

The report also says that one of the great things about HIIPA is that it does away with the usual obstacles that hold people back from making exercise a regular part of their routine—like the high price of gym memberships, not having enough time, and simply lacking the skills and motivation.

HIIPA is gaining popularity at just the right time, considering many Americans just aren’t meeting the current guidelines, which call for adults to complete 150 to 300 minutes of moderate physical activity, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity, per week. Only 26% of men and 19% of women are meeting that benchmark, according to research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association last year with the updated physical activity guidelines.

“The new guidelines demonstrate that, based on the best science, everyone can dramatically improve their health just by moving—anytime, anywhere, and by any means that gets you active,” said Admiral Brett P…

What Does It Really Mean to Be Happy? 6 Experts Explain

When you go to your “happy place,” you might picture yourself relaxing on a beach in Bali, fitting back into a pair of favorite old jeans, or landing that promotion you’ve been gunning for. But here’s the thing: Elation, achievement, and success aren’t the same as the warm and fuzzy feelings of happiness—and mixing them up may actually bum you out. That’s why we endeavored to learn what happiness really means, by interviewing a handful of people who have devoted years of their lives to studying it. Read about what their research and real-life experience has taught them; then use their wisdom and advice to boost your own joy. (Spoiler alert: Those old jeans will do more good in the giveaway bin.)

“Happiness isn’t something you feel. It’s something you do.”

I used to think I had a clear idea of what happiness looks like. I came to the U.S. at 13. My family emigrated from Russia, and we lived outside of Detroit. It was a really rough time, especially because I didn’t speak English. I was overwhelmed with anxiety and self-doubt. The only time I felt OK was when I achieved anything—the day I was moved from remedial English, the day I moved out of the projects.

I thought, “This is how I’m going to be happy: I’m going to achieve things.” I lived my life with this attitude. I’ll be happy when I get into a good college. When I graduate. When I move to New York. When I get married. When I’m able to take care of my family…

I was always proud of my achievements, yet the happiness bubble would eventually pop. I thought I wasn’t doing enough to gain the privilege of feeling good, but I hit a wall, burned out, and couldn’t push anymore.

When I stumbled onto research about gratitude nine years ago, I thought it was a bunch of BS. Saying three things I was grateful for would make me happy? Ridiculous. If I was grateful for everything, I wouldn’t work for anything. Still, I decided to do a 30-day experiment. I told my husband and daughter that each day, I’d write down something I was grateful for and say “thank you” to someone at least once.

RELATED: Here’s How Feeling Grateful Can Improve Your Life

The punch line is obvious. I noticed a difference right away. It’s not like I became a happy-go-lucky person, but I started to find joy in small, everyday moments. Tiny things, like my daughter running up to give me a hug. Coming into my living room and noticing the light hitting a vase of tulips. Even driving to work in minimal traffic and suddenly enjoying the commute.

Before I began practicing gratitude, I wasn’t present for those moments. I only stepped on them before running away. Happiness, I now realize, is not something you feel, but something you do. We don’t have to earn it, or be “good enough…

What inspired you to write about the power of decluttering?

Your space reflects you. It projects your identity to the world. If you look around and everything you own is useful or beloved, you may feel more integrated with yourself.

Any advice for getting started?

Adopt the one-minute rule. Anything you can do in less than a minute, do without delay. Throw away a wrapper. File an email. Hang up your coat. That will get rid of that scum of clutter on the surface of life. And over time, you start to see a big difference.

RELATED: I Tried Marie Kondo's Tidying Up Method—and It Had a Serious Impact on My Happiness

Once you’ve cleared the clutter, then what?

It’s not enough to get rid of stuff that’s dragging us down; we also need things that lift us up. We want to be delighted in our spaces. You can add whatever you want to your space to make it beautiful—just choose those things purposefully.

What else do you do to feel happier?

Relationships are most important to me. I’m in four book groups because I love to see friends and I love books. I also have this habit with my sister and parents called “update”: About once a week, we send a super-boring email about whatever’s going on, just to make ourselves feel more connected.

What’s your morning routine like?

The first thing I do is kiss my husband. He’s usually still asleep, but I’m like, “I want to kiss my husband before I check my phone.” Then most days I go for a long walk in Central Park. It’s exercise, it’s nature, it’s light on my face resetting my circadian rhythm. It’s the greatest thing.

How about when you’re feeling blue—how do you recover?

Do 10 jumping jacks! I tell my daughters this all the time. Or run down the stairs. It makes you feel goofy and energized.

This 6-Step Yoga Flow Will Open Up Your Tight Hips

– health.com

On average, we sit for about 12 hours every day. “Yikes” is right. “Whether it’s at a desk or in the car, when people sit for most of the day, they may develop tight hip flexors. These muscles attach to the lumbar spine and could create lower-back pain when they are shortened,” explains physical therapist Erica Anne Meloe, owner of Velocity Physiotherapy in New York City and author of Why Do I Hurt?

So what can you do to help those suffering hip muscles? First, make sure you’re getting up and walking around throughout the day—researchers suggest at least once every 30 minutes. But to further help, try this hip-opening sequence created specifically for Health readers by Peloton yoga instructor Kristin McGee. “These poses take a 360-degree approach, helping to stretch and strengthen the hips from all angles—front, side, and back,” says McGee.

Run through them three to four times a week, and you’ll feel so much looser.

Get onto all fours. Cross right leg over left, then sit back down between your heels or on a block, with knees stacked. Extend left arm toward ceiling, then bend left elbow, bringing palm to touch the center of upper back; then bend right arm behind back, trying to grasp fingers of left hand. Stay here for 5–8 breaths, breathing evenly; then switch sides and repeat. To make it more comfortable, you can also sit on a blanket instead of a block.

From Bound Angle pose, cross right knee over left ankle and bring bottom leg in so right ankle is over left knee, with shins stacked. Bring both palms to floor in front of you, leaning forward slightly. Hold here for 5–8 breaths.

Half Reclining Hero’s pose

Kneel on mat with knees together. Sit back on heels, and then extend right leg straight out in front of you. Slide left foot slightly wider than knee with the top of left foot on the floor and big toe angled in, allowing butt to rest on floor. Then place hands on floor behind you and lean back, bringing elbows and forearms to floor behind you. Woman Contracts Rare Autoimmune Disease From Touching Stray Cat: 'I'll Have It for Life'

Even after contracting a life-altering syndrome from a feral cat she befriended on vacation, Gemma Birch still considers herself an animal lover.

The 25-year-old from Southport, England, was spending a week in Albufeira, Portugal, in June 2015 when she took in a “gorgeous” stray cat who would lounge on the patio of the rental apartment, Birch recalls to PEOPLE.

Immediately smitten, Birch began giving the animal milk from a bowl and letting her inside.

“She obviously loved me, and she’d follow me everywhere,” says Birch, who runs a lifestyle blog and works in a gym. “I was fine all week. I was so sad to leave her.”

But on the last night, she started vomiting severely and suffering from diarrhea. On the plane ride home, on top of her existing symptoms, Birch started to feel faint.

By the time she landed, her stomach was so swollen she looked “nine months pregnant,” she says. “Like I was about to burst.”

She made it home, where her father immediately told her she needed to go to the hospital because she was so weak and pale, Birch recalls.

After spending a week in the ICU and undergoing many tests, doctors discovered Birch had been infected with campylobacter, a common cause of food poisoning.

Doctors asked if she’d eaten any uncooked poultry. A staunch vegetarian, Birch said no. Then they asked if she had come into contact with any animals recently, and she remembered her feline friend.

Next came more tests, which helped the medical team discover that she had contracted the infection from a living animal.

“Once they found out, they weren’t worried. They said I’d get better at home with bedrest,” Birch recalls. “But I got worse. I couldn’t walk. I kept falling and losing my balance.”

Her symptoms, inconsistent food poisoning, led Birch to make repeated appointments with her general practitioner, who kept telling her to just get more rest.

“Eventually I stopped going because I felt like I was bugging them,” Birch says. “But you just know when it’s something else.”

Then, two weeks after leaving the hospital — three weeks after returning from Portugal — Birch woke up around 3 a.m. because she’d fallen out of bed.

“I couldn’t feel my legs on the sheets or my feet on the carpet,” she explains. “I started scratching my legs so hard that they bled, but I still couldn’t feel it. I screamed for my dad, and he took me to the hospital.”

In the emergency room, Birch says she googled her symptoms and the campylobacter bacteria, which turned up three words: Guillain-Barré syndrome…

15 Transformations That'll Inspire You to Start Lifting Weights

Stacey D.

In two years, Stacey went from CrossFit obsessed (left) to entering into the world of powerlifting and counting macros (right). She lost 15 pounds and about 5 percent body fat, but not overnight. "Understanding that this whole fitness thing is a lifelong journey really helps me understand that there's ups, downs, weekends of eating it all, weeks of consistency, fat days, 'damn who dat' when you look in the mirror days, and overall a lot of learning and self-encouragement, forgiveness and love," she wrote.

The now-trainer and Insta star used to find weights intimidating so she stuck to cardio classes. But once she picked up a dumbbell, she realized the body she wanted couldn't be achieved with light lifting. "My 'gains' came very slowly, compared to many. It took me a really long time to start doing full push-ups (especially darn triceps ones)," she writes. This photo—and Katie's story—are proof that if you can get past intimidation and frustrations, hard work will pay off eventually.

Kathryn Nash started reaching for dumbbells as finishers for her BBG workouts, but pretty soon, the weights became her favorite part of the workout. After ditching HIIT to go all in with lifting, it took almost a year for Kathryn to build up her backside. "This took me a solid year of bulking to build the muscle I currently have. Don't be afraid to lift heavy and EAT, ladies!!! You can't grow if you neglect either of them. Muscle growth takes time and a whole lot of patience, but it is so worth it. Gainz are nice and all, but nothing beats the adrenaline rush you get from lifting heavy a$$ iron," she says.

Over the past four years, the Canadian fitfluencer has built her booty with a mix of heavy lifting four times a week and strategic cardio. "A structured weightlifting routine that has you progressively doing 'more' over time will deliver the best and most predictable results," she writes.

This Is the Legging Trend You'll Be Seeing Everywhere in 2019

The biggest legging trend for 2019 will look pretty familiar to anyone who lived in Adidas track pants back in the '90s.

Workout tights that take a cue from the brand's iconic tri-color side stripe are everywhere right now. And while the original is still cool, we're also seeing lots of leggings that have a refreshed take on the classic style—think side stripes on modern fabrics, over eye-catching prints, and paired with other trendy features like mesh panels or colorblocking. We're guessing some of the stripe-y bottoms below will soon be popping up at your gym or next SoulCycle class; add them to your cart now before they're gone.

Updated classics

Left: The beloved Adidas 3-Stripe Tights ($40; nordstrom.com) has a lean-but-not-too-tight fit that's perfect for low-impact workouts or just lazing on the couch. Nation Crossbar Legging ($150; carbon38.com) has a seven-color stripe on one side and solid green colorblock on the other—so you can rock different looks from every angle.

Stripes + patterns

Halle Berry Just Posted a Bikini Selfie Wearing Her Favorite Anti-Aging Mask

– health.com

Is seemingly ageless skin just too much to ask for? Clearly. But if you've seen photos of actress Halle Berry recently, you'll be convinced that she's stumbled upon the answer. What is the 52-year-old's secret to her gorgeous complexion?

Berry leads an active, healthy lifestyle (including regular boxing workouts and following the keto diet), which surely helps boost her skin's health from within. But if you've wondered which topical treatments she uses to achieve that famous glow, you're in luck. The actress just posted a selfie where she raved about her favorite anti-aging product: a creamy, white anti-aging mask from Olga Lorencin. (Former Bachelor star Ashley Iaconetti is also a fan of the brand.)

"Treat Ya Self Tuesday," she captioned the post. "When in doubt, face masks are EVERYTHING. I personally love @olgalorencinskincare’s ageless mask." Um, where's our invite to Berry's spa day?

Berry's favorite anti-aging treatment is actually a two-step overnight process. Step one is a peel that gently exfoliates for a bright, glowing complexion; step two is a hydrating sleep mask that plumps and illuminates skin.

This winning combination firms skin, minimizes pores and wrinkles, and helps even out pigmentation.

To buy: $98; dermstore.com

The formula boasts powerful ingredients like succinic acid (a natural plant-based exfoliant) and phytomoist (a moisturizer made from mushrooms). It's also packed with ferulic acid, allantoin, and arginine, which work to neutralize free radicals and prevent damage, calm redness and decrease inflammation, improve skin texture (bye, wrinkles and enlarged pores), and boost hydration.

If you have lackluster skin, you can use this treatment on your face, neck, and décolleté two to three times a week. It works well on all skin types, including sensitive skin.

The best news? Berry's anti-aging face mask isn't exclusive to A-listers. You can pick up Olga Lorencin Skin Care Ageless Facial in a Box online for $98 at dermstore.com or $78 at qvc.com, and get the actress's signature glow overnight.

According to the company’s site, the product is made of bentonite clay sourced from Death Valley, California, where “it is sun-dried for up to six months in temperatures that sometimes reach 134 degrees.” Though it’s crucial to know what’s in the mask, it’s even more important to know what’s not: The mask has with no additives, fragrances, or animal products that may irritate sensitive skin. And even more celebs than the Khloé Kardashians are into it.

This Woman Shared Her Cystic Acne Transformation and the Quick Fix That Actually Worked

– health.com

If you're tuned into skin-care forums, then you know that the brand Drunk Elephant has a wide stan base. People are loving the fact that the products' ingredient lists are stacked with acids, peptides, vitamins, etc., but free of what the company calls the "Suspicious 6."

One mega fan, Lisa Paddock, recently wrote an Instagram post about her experience with the brand, revealing how the products cleared her acne and, in turn, boosted her self-esteem.

RELATED: This Teen Is Claiming Green Tea Cleared Her Cystic Acne in Viral Tweet

In her caption, she opened up about a recent mental health struggle that affected "just about every facet" of her life. She was barely making enough money to pay her bills, was in a toxic relationship, and had been dealing with depression and anxiety since she was 12, she tells Shape.

To add insult to injury, she started getting acne for the first time in her 20s. (Yay, mysterious adult acne.) "After I turned 25, my skin completely changed," she says. At first, it was the occasional breakout, but then she started getting painful cystic acne. She tried OTC products, prescription products, and changing her diet, but they didn't help.

Paddock dove into more research and decided to give Drunk Elephant a try after reading reviews. (ICYMI, the company finally launched a retinol cream this month.) She had quick results that cleared up her acne and boosted her confidence, she explained in her recent Instagram.

"Within a month my skin had changed drastically and just kept improving with each day of consistent use," Paddock wrote in her recent Instagram post. "The most beautiful part though is that as my skin cleared and healed, so did my soul. The better I began to feel about my skin, the better I felt inside. Some people may think it’s ridiculous to say skin care is a form of mental health self-care, but for me, that is exactly what Drunk Elephant is!"

If that statement has you ready to drink the Kool-Aid, you can copy Paddock's routine product-for-product.

Morning: She mixes one pump each of: 1 pump of B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum ($52, sephora.com); 1 pump of C-Firma Day Serum ($80, sephora.com); 1 pump of Protini Polypeptide Cream ($68; sephora.com); 2 to 3 drops of Virgin Marula Luxury Face Oil ($72, sephora.com). (Drunk Elephant advocates mixing its products together to create a "cocktail.")

Then she'll apply C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream ($64, sephora.com) followed by a teaspoon of either Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Sunscreen ($36, sephora.com) or Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense Sunscreen ($34, sephora.com) mixed with a half pump of D Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops ($36, sephora.com).

The Only Anti-Aging Serum That Actually Banished My Forehead Wrinkles

– health.com

One day in my late teens, I looked in the mirror and noticed deep lines starting to appear across my forehead. I quickly realized that I’d never appreciated having smooth and wrinkle-free skin until that moment, and because of my fairly young age, I knew this was just the beginning. So I hurried to the nearest beauty store to look for a fix—I was determined to find an over-the-counter product that could give me the best possible results.

When I explained my problem to the saleswoman, she immediately led me to Dermalogica’s Age Smart Multivitamin Power Serum ($69; dermstore.com or ulta.com). At first, I’ll admit, I was turned off by the price tag—but the saleswoman was adamant about how well the serum worked (and I was sort of desperate) so I decided to give it a shot. Little did I know at the time, this serum would become my go-to product and a godsend for my forehead lines over the years.

Since then, I’ve tried quite a few alternatives—both drugstore and luxury brands—and I’ve yet to find one that works as well on my forehead lines as the Dermalogica serum. It comes in a .75-ounce tube, but a little goes a long way, so I only have to purchase it a few times a year. Every time I use the cream overnight, I wake up with my skin feeling soft, smooth, and hydrated, which is an added plus during the harsh New York City winters I experience each year. As someone with acne-prone skin, I have to be wary of serums that are too thick or oily, but I’ve used this cream all over my face and haven’t had a breakout from it yet.

RELATED: The Best Over-the-Counter Retinol Creams, According to Dermatologists

If my skin’s feeling particularly tired and dehydrated after a late night out or a long day at work, I slather on even more of the cream and let it work its magic. With antioxidants like vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E included in the ingredients, it’s no surprise that it feels amazing on my skin. And while I can definitely feel the product after I apply it, it doesn’t get heavy, greasy, or sticky—in fact, it’s more like a protective shell that hardens slightly after it dries. I usually opt to wash my face the morning after I use it, though it easily comes off with just water.

According to customer reviews, I’m not the only one who’s completely satisfied with this purchase. “I started using this about two months ago and I'm obsessed,” said one reviewer. “It has evened out my uneven skin tone, reduced the wrinkles around my eyes and lips, and overall has made my skin look amazing considering I was a child of the '60s and laid out in the sun everyday with no sunscreen until at least the late '90s. I'm so thankful to Dermalogica for making this awesome serum. I've tried so many ‘miracle’ products and this is the only one that has done what it said. I'm in love.”

Chocolate Lilac Hair Is the Perfect Trend for Brunettes to Try This Season

Chocolate Lilac Hair Is the Perfect Trend for Brunettes to Try This Season

Chocolate lilac hair is here, and it's slowly but surely taking over the world. OK, maybe that's a little dramatic, but seriously—this trend is everywhere, and for good reason. Letting whimsical strands of light purple float through a rich brunette mane is the perfect combination of playful and put-together. It's unique, but not over the top. Classy, but not boring.

There are countless different ways to do this look. You can dial up the purple, giving your strands more of an electric feel, or opt for a lighter shade, giving you the fairy crown you deserve. There's no right or wrong when it comes to a chocolate lilac mane.

RELATED: 7 Hair Color Trends That Are Going to Be Huge in 2019

Before you hop on the trend, it's important you know how to care for newly dyed hair. Shampooing your hair too often can cause colored hair to fade quickly, so pick up a formula that will help retain your color, like R+Co Gemstone ($24, amazon.com) or Oribe Shampoo for Beautiful Color ($46, amazon.com).

Below, we've rounded up seven of our favorite chocolate lilac looks. Take these to the salon for inspiration, or use them to imagine your own version of this style. No matter what brunette-purple combo you choose, you're guaranteed a head-turning look.

This Woman Woke Up With a Rare Condition That Makes Her Unable to Hear Men’s Voices

Admit it: You've occasionally (or more than occasionally) wished you could hit mute on the men in your life. That wish recently came true for a woman in China, but it didn't quite happen the way it does in our dreams. She was diagnosed with a type of hearing loss that left her unable to understand low-pitched sounds, a.k.a. male voices.

According to the Daily Mail, a Chinese woman only identified by her last name, Chen, woke up one morning unable to hear her boyfriend's voice. Chen was also up vomiting the night before and started to notice a ringing in her ear then, so she knew something serious was going on.

RELATED: Your Ultimate Guide to Healthy Ears

She went to Qianpu Hospital, where an ear, nose, and throat specialist Lin Xiaoqing diagnosed her with a rare form of low-frequency hearing damage called reverse-slope hearing loss (RSHL), which prevents people from hearing low-frequency sounds.

Chen, who lives in southeastern China, is one of very few people to develop the condition. The Thigpen Hearing Center, an audiology clinic in Tennessee, states that RHSL affects only about 3,000 people in the United States and Canada. In other words, for every 12,000 cases of hearing loss, only one person has RSHL.

People with RHSL typically have no problem hearing high-frequency sounds, like voices of women and children, but they struggle to hear low-frequency noises, like vehicles, thunder, and voices over the phone.

RELATED: Gwen Stefani Ruptured Her Eardrum on a Plane—Could It Happen to You?

Dr. Xiaoqing reported Chen could hear her voice perfectly fine during the appointment, but she couldn't understand the voice of a male patient who was also at the hospital.

Many things can cause RHSL, including genetic abnormalities and certain diseases and infections. A change in the pressure of the fluid in the inner ear has also been known to be a trigger. Dr. Xiaoqing believes Chen developed the condition because of stress and a severe lack of sleep. Thankfully, Chen is expected to make a full recovery after treatment.

Surgeon Will Pay $3,000 Fine for Removing Kidney He Mistakenly Thought Was a Tumor

A Florida surgeon has agreed to pay a $3,000 fine, as well as perform hours of continued medical training, after removing a woman’s kidney during what was intended to be back surgery.

According to court records, Maureen Pacheco, who checked into Florida’s Wellington Regional Medical Center in April 2016 to have a few vertebra in her lower back fused together, was not consulted about the change of plans, the Washington Post reported.

RELATED: Man Declared Dead by Three Doctors Wakes Up Hours Before Autopsy in Spain

However, during the back procedure, surgeon Ramon Vazquez mistook her kidney for a cancerous tumor in Pacheco’s pelvis and cut it out, according to the Palm Beach Post, citing a lawsuit that had been settled in September.

A pathologist at the hospital confirmed that the tumor was actually a pelvic kidney, the Palm Beach Post reported. Pelvic kidneys refer to organs that failed “to ascend to their normal position above the waist” during fetal development, ” according to the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

In addition to the $3,000 fine, Vasquez has also agreed to complete 3 hours of continuing medical edition in how to evaluate pre-operative spinal surgical patients, as well as five hours of risk management training, according to a court documents filed by the Florida Board of Medicine on Dec. 27.

Vasquez has also agreed to perform a one-hour lecture regarding wrong-site surgery “to the entire medical staff of the hospital” where he maintains staff privileges, according to the documents.

Additionally the surgeon will pay the $4,817.90 in costs the Florida Department of Health incurred while investigating and prosecuting the case.

Prior to reaching the final agreement, the Florida Board of Medicine initially rejected a settlement that carried only a $1,500 fine, according to the Palm Beach Post.

RELATED: This Woman Went to 17 Doctors Before Finally Getting the Right Diagnosis

In a statement, the surgeon’s attorney, Michael Burt told the Palm Beach Post, “Dr. Vazquez is an excellent surgeon who has been providing exemplary, often life-saving services in our community for many years. In this instance he, in collaboration with other members of the surgical team, exercised professional judgement.”

Vazquez’s attorney also told the outlet that the lawsuit “was settled on his behalf for a nominal amount,” adding that his client did not “admit liability by agreeing to this settlement.”

According to a health complaint filed by the Florida Health Department in December, the “unauthorized procedure” was “medically unnecessary” as it was “unrelated” to the lumbar fusion Pacheco was scheduled to receive that day…

Exotic Dancer Left with a Sagging Butt After Removing Life-Threatening Silicone Injections

Ten years after getting dangerous butt injections, Tomi Conte is still dealing with the consequences.

The exotic dancer decided at 23 to get injections after feeling insecure about the size of her butt.

“I started dancing when I was in high school. I would say I was about 23 when I noticed that all of the other dancers — they all had big butts, and they were making a lot more money than me,” Conte, now 33, says in this exclusive clip from Botched.

RELATED: Why Cardi B’s Scary Butt Injection Procedure Could Actually Be Life-Threatening

After seeing a friend’s results, Conte met with a woman for illegal injections.

“My girlfriend was getting silicone injections in her butt by this lady that would fly in from Florida,” she explains. “She was a retired nurse. We met at a nice hotel. I laid down on the bed. She pulled out a huge needle and she had like, red kegger cups that she was filling up with stuff, and I asked her what it was, and she said, like, silicone, but I didn’t ask enough questions.”

At first, the injections worked for Conte.

“At that point in my life, I was living so crazy that I thought I was invincible,” she says. “The shots hurt, but I was really happy with what I saw. The bigger my butt got, the bigger my tips got.”

RELATED: Mom of 2 Dies After Getting Butt Implants

But over time they became life-threatening, and Conte had to get them removed. But that led to more problems.

“I had silicone removed from my butt to save my life, and now you can see my butt from the front,” she says.

Conte is hopeful that Drs. Paul Nassif and Terry Dubrow can fix up the sagging skin on her butt, but for now, she’s stuck layering on clothing for a lift.

“When I work out, I put on a girdle that pulls up all the skin from the front,” she says. “Then I put on padded panties and that fills up all the dents I have on the side. Over all of that, I put on compression shorts so that I tuck in any scars that I have, and then I put my regular shorts on over that. That’s like four or five layers that I’m wearing every day.”

1-Year-Old Boy Has the Sweetest Reaction to Meeting a Woman Missing the Same Limb as Him

A young boy born with a congenital condition had an adorable reaction when he was introduced to a woman who shares the same limb difference as him.

On the same day that Colleen Tidd found out that her son, Joseph, would be born without a fully formed left arm, she stumbled upon the Florida chapter of the Lucky Fin Project, a support network made up of people with a variety of limb differences. Ever since then, the organization’s community has been a source of help for Colleen and her husband as they raise now 15-month-old Joseph, along with their two older daughters.

“I found their website and Facebook page and it just brought this sense of comfort,” Tidd, 28, tells PEOPLE. “I realized, ‘Hey, I have a community here.’ “

As Tidd formed friendships with the local members of the group, she soon discovered that many of them had never met in person, so she organized an October meet-up near her home in Orlando that was attended by nearly a dozen families.

“It was just a great sense of comfort, not only for Joseph but for us as a family, to see everyone else in person,” Tidd says of the gathering. “And we wanted to show Joseph that, hey, he will be able to do anything.”

Colleen and Joseph Tidd/Colleen Tidd

During the meet-up, Colleen and Joseph met 34-year-old Amy Alamillo Siesel, who was also born with an underdeveloped right arm.

“I was bullied quite a bit and constantly inundated with questions about my arm,” Siesel, from Seminole, Florida, tells PEOPLE. “I struggled with insecurity. As I became an adult, however, I gained a newfound confidence in who I felt God made me to be. I began to embrace my limb difference and love the lessons it taught me, hard as some of them were.”

It was at the gathering that day that Siesel and Joseph’s paths crossed for the first time — and in a touching video of their introduction, Amy is seen reaching out to Joseph to give him a “fist-bump,” before the young boy lunges toward to give her a big hug instead after he noticed their similarities.

“He wasn’t feeling well that day and he didn’t want anyone to touch them the whole time, until he fist-bumped with Amy and realized like, ‘Wow, she looks like me,’ ” Tidd recalls. “This meetup was originally more for me than it was for him since he’s so young, but for him to have realized that he has someone that’s like him — it just hit. It was comforting.”

How to Make Your Resolutions Last All Year

[brightcove:4874680281001 default]

Did you resolve to make a change this year? Whether your goal was to eat healthier, run a marathon, or finally start meditating, keep those shiny new resolutions and avoid backsliding with these proven strategies from Gretchen Rubin, author of Better Than Before: What I Learned About Making and Breaking Habits—to Sleep More, Quit Sugar, Procrastinate Less, and Generally Build a Happier Life ($16; amazon.com).

RELATED: If You’re Going to Make One Diet Change in 2018, Make It This One

1. Name it

Aiming to be fitter or healthier is a laudable goal, but what does that mean? "Choose a goal that is concrete and measurable and tied to an actual behavior," says Rubin. Examples: You want to be more active, so you’ll walk your dog every morning in the park. You want to eat better, so you’ll snack on fruit instead of chips.

2. Know yourself

Ask, "What kind of person am I, really?" If you’re not a morning person, don’t resolve to wake up at 5 a.m. to go to the gym before work—that approach is not only unrealistic, it’s going to fail fast. Rubin suggests recalling past successes to clue you in to what will work for you.

RELATED: How to Make Over Your Worst Health Habits

3. Plan for failure

Things are bound to go wrong along the way (you’ll attend a party and be surrounded by to-die-for cupcakes, say). The key is to anticipate those challenges and make an if-then plan, notes Rubin. For instance, tell yourself: "If there are cupcakes at this party, then I’ll take one, relish every bite and walk away."

4. Show yourself some love

"When you feel energized and cared for, it’s easier to resist temptation," says Rubin. So beyond basic self-care, make sure you’re regularly treating yourself in healthy (i.e., not food- or shopping related) ways: Do a crossword puzzle when you drink your coffee, or burn a scented candle.

RELATED: 13 Weight Loss Resolutions You Shouldn't Make

5. Reframe it

People sometimes feel "done" when they achieve their goal, says Rubin. "Don’t think of it as a finish line. Consider it just one milestone out of many," she says. Think about how you can build on your original goal so you have a new target to shoot for—even before you reach the first one. That way, the good-for-you momentum will carry on

The Secret to This Woman's Fitness Transformation Was Changing Why She Exercises

– health.com

Emily Ricketts had a major weight loss transformation, but she wants her followers to know it didn't come from a place of self-hatred. Just the opposite: Ricketts says that it was learning to love her body that sparked the dramatic change.

In a before-and-after Instagram post, Ricketts explained that there was another difference between the two photos other than weight loss. She wrote that in the earlier photo, she was fueled by hate, while in the recent photo she was motivated by love. "Love gets you up at 6am for that workout not because you’ll feel bad if you don’t but because you’ll feel damn good if you do," she wrote. "Love let’s you enjoy food without guilt. Love doesn’t have a size. It isn’t a number—on the scale, in your jeans. It’s a feeling, a mindset, a motivation. Hate? That gets you nowhere."

In an earlier post, Ricketts revealed that shifting her mindset from aiming to be skinny to aiming to be strong also helped. "The secret? I’ve stopped using food as a reward and exercise as a punishment," she wrote in the caption. "I challenge and cherish my body in equal measures. I work out because it makes me feel GOOD, not because it’ll make me feel BAD if I don’t." (Here are 15 more transformations that will inspire you to start lifting weights.)

As Ricketts' photos suggest, there's often more to a #transformationtuesday post than meets the eye. (Same goes for Anna Victoria's 5-year transformation and Katie Willcox's "freshman 25" photo) Regardless of your weight-loss goals, for anyone looking to get started on a health journey in 2019, Ricketts' advice is solid. Starting from a place of self-love, rather than self-hate, and working out to feel good (rather than torturing yourself with classes you loathe) is always the way to go in our book.

11 New Year's Resolutions for Body Acceptance

I quit dieting at age 28 after realizing that it made my body image and eating issues worse. But after the birth of my second child—with a decade of solid body acceptance and recovery from binge eating disorder under my belt—I thought I was strong enough to dip my toe into dietland again.

Wrong. Dieting's focus on weight and food-tracking brought my body troubles and binge eating zooming back, along with even more extra pounds. I’ve put diets in my rearview mirror again, and with New Year's resolution season upon us, I'm glad to say I'm resolving not to go on any weight-loss plan.

If you're tired of starting January 1 by launching a diet and judging yourself by what you do or don't eat and what the bathroom scale says, consider one of these 12 body acceptance resolutions instead. They'll set you up for a healthier, happier 2019.

Clean up your social media feeds

Before-and-after pictures bragging about drastic weight loss. Celebs flashing their abs while hawking “detox” teas. Fitspo. Some say these types of social-media posts are motivational. But they encourage unhelpful comparisons, body shame, and unhealthy dieting practices in many people. Resolve to unfollow or mute any person or brand that fosters a dieting mentality or makes you feel bad about your body. For healthier attitudes and body diversity, follow yoga star Jessamyn Stanley and supermodel Ashley Graham.

Ignore body-type fashion advice and start wearing what you love

Like most women, you probably have some item of clothing you really want to wear, but you hide it in the back of your closet because fashion advice experts have convinced you it's unflattering for your size or shape. Thing is, if you're in a velvet jumpsuit kind of mood, who cares if your butt looks big—and why is bigger bad, anyway? Who are you dressing for, yourself or some judgmental stylist?

In dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), this is called “acting opposite to shame,” and it can change the way you feel about yourself in an instant. Put on that horizontal-striped turtleneck or clingy sweater dress one morning and give it a try.

Quit forcing yourself to eat what you don’t like

Yes, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are good for you, and yes, they're part of a balanced plate. But that doesn’t mean you have to stuff your favorite pasta dish full of extra broccoli if it ruins the taste, or you need to pour chia seeds in your smoothie if you don’t actually like them. Eating out of guilt (“I should do this”) increases stress and takes pleasure out of eating, which sets the stage for feelings of rebellion and overeating later on, says Dana Notte, RD, lead dietician at Green Mountain at Fox Run, a wellness and healthy eating retreat in Vermont…

The One Squat Variation You Need to Be Doing for a Perkier Butt

– health.com

Squats are to leg day as sheet masks are to #selfcaresunday: essential. As many face mask options as there are in the world, there might be even more variations of the classic booty-building move. There are goblet squats, sumo squats, barbell back squats, jump squats, and loads more. Trust us, squats aren't going anywhere soon—but there’s one variation your routine may be missing.

Enter: The Bulgarian split squat—also referred to as the rear foot elevated split squat or just simply a split squat. “Bulgarian split squats are one of the best movements for developing glute, quad, hamstring, and core strength because it’s a unilateral exercise—meaning that it works and strengthens one leg at a time,” certified personal trainer Quianna Camper, a trainer with RSP Nutrition, tells Health.

Why is unilateral leg training such a big deal? According to physical therapist and certified strength and conditioning specialist Grayson Wickham, founder of Movement Vault, it comes down to compensation. “Most people are not perfectly symmetrical. So their right leg or glute might be stronger than the left, which means when you do a normal squat, the stronger side will compensate," he says. "Single-leg exercises like the split squat can help fix those muscle imbalances by developing that lower-body and core strength symmetrically.” Some research even suggests that unilateral exercises are more effective for building strength than bilateral movements like the standard squat. (Talk about upgrading your leg day).

RELATED: 6 Ways to Upgrade a Basic Squat

Because you need to activate your core during Bulgarian split squats in order to keep your chest upright, Camper says, “they also help you build core strength, and the benefit of that is that it improves your overall balance and stability.” Translation: Add Bulgarian split squats to your routine and you’ll sculpt a peach, strengthen your quads and core, and decrease risk of falling (and therefore injury) as you age.

Ready to feel the booty burn? Below, Wickham and Camper walk you through how to do a Bulgarian split squat, plus a few variations of the super-effective single-leg move.

How to do a Bulgarian split squat

Start standing with your feet hip-width apart, facing away from a box, bench, or chair that is no higher than your knees. Extend your left leg back and put the top of your foot (aka laces down) on the box. If this is uncomfortable on your left ankle, you may want to pad your left ankle with a yoga mat or towel. Then, readjust your right leg so that you're standing 12–24 inches in front of the box, hips squared forward. This is your starting position.

When you’re ready to begin, tuck your tailbone, engage your core, and draw your shoulders back. Keeping your chest up, lower your hips into a front lunge position by bending your right knee and dropping your left knee straight to the ground…

The 7 Best Home Treadmills You'll Actually Want to Use

– health.com

The new year is the perfect time to finally set up that home gym you've been wanting—and when it comes to at-home workouts, a good treadmill is pretty much essential. Rain or shine, a treadmill will make it easy to get your steps in (no excuses!). Whether you're after the latest high-tech features or would be content with a more basic, budget-friendly model, these are the best treadmills in every price range for 2019.

Treadmills under $3,500

Treadmills under $500

• Confidence Power Trac Pro 735W ($230; amazon.com). It's hard to beat a treadmill under $300, and this affordable model still makes it easy to fit in a serious cardio session…

10 Body-Positivity Moments of 2018 That Were Major Wins for All Women

Pop the champagne and throw the confetti, it’s time to celebrate. The body-positive movement had some major wins in 2018, from #AerieREAL giving body hair a public platform to plus-size models taking over Times Square. We've rounded up 10 of the most badass body-positivity moments of 2018—so you can relive the top power moves of the year.

Tess Holliday enjoyed tub time with her young son

We can always count on Tess Holliday to keep it real on Instagram, but her standout post from the year showed her son, Bowie, in the bathtub interrupting her alone time in the bathtub. It's an unguarded moment not everyone would be comfortable posting on social media, yet Holliday had no problem putting it out there. “This photo isn’t ‘flattering’, but I don’t care,” she wrote. “I’m proud of my body, & what it’s capable of & how funny & ridiculous my life/motherhood is.”

Sarah Hyland showed off her surgery scar

Sarah Hyland has never been shy about sharing details of her health issues on social media—especially her kidney transplant scar. In July, the Modern Family actress posted a photo of herself in a bikini while on vacation in Mexico. Look closely; you can see the scar on her abdomen. Hyland had the surgery in 2012 due to a condition called kidney dysplasia.

An #AerieREAL model flaunted her armpit hair

Everyone can agree #AerieREAL is taking home the body-positivity crown this year. The campaign has featured a model in a wheelchair, another with alopecia, and even a woman flaunting armpit hair. She also has braces, something so many young women can relate to but are rarely seen in ads.

Chrissy Teigen clapped back at a hater who criticized her weight

Chrissy Teigen looked absolutely stunning in a silver ensemble at the 2018 Emmy Awards. But while most of her fans were fawning over her style, one lowly Twitter user chimed in with this gem: "I’m asking this with the utmost respectful [sic], but is @chrissyteigen pregnant again?" Teigen isn’t afraid to put haters in their place, and she didn't waste any time doing so. "I just had a baby but thank you for being soooo respectful,” she wrote from her seat at the Emmys. You tell ‘em, girl.

Kylie Jenner's scar graced the cover of a magazine

Kylie Jenner’s scar was front and center on the August cover of GQ. “What’s the biggest scar on my body?” Jenner asked her partner, Travis Scott, in a video at the cover shoot, quizzing him on how well he knows her. Scott had no trouble getting the answer right. “The biggest scar? On your leg,” he replied. Jenner has never tried to hide her the jagged line on her leg, and really, why should she?

I Tried a Lash Lift—and It Gave Me The Lashes of My Dreams + MORE

I Tried a Lash Lift—and It Gave Me The Lashes of My Dreams

– health.com

Is lash envy a thing? Because I definitely have it. The same way some people might lust over another woman's hair or plump lips, I can't help but stare at a full, fluttery pair of lashes. I wasn't born with Disney princess eyelashes—you know what I'm talking about, from Ariel to Jasmine, they all peek through perfectly framed lids—and I've never been happy with how my lashes looked, especially without mascara. But then I finally came across the perfect solution for long, dark lashes that I feel confident in every day—even without makeup.

I wasn't the type to seek eyelash extensions out. The thought of getting them had never really crossed my mind until it became the beauty industry's worst-kept secret and every editor I knew had them. So, obviously, I hopped on board, too. I went to Envious Lashes in New York City for the first time and tried out a relatively natural set, and immediately it changed the way I looked and felt about my appearance. I was hooked. Over time, I went more dramatic with my fringe and dreaded the day that I would need to take a break from my extensions for the health of my lashes. I'm still a big fan of extensions, but in the long run, they weren't for me because of the maintenance. Going every two to three weeks for a fill-in didn't fit into my schedule, and I had to kiss my precious extensions good-bye.

Though my lashes were healthy post-extensions, they weren't as full or long as I'd grown accustomed to with them on. I'd compare it to walking around in heels for an extended period of time and loving the way your legs look, only to take them off and feel stocky with your new flat feet. So, I turned to a lash growth serum. I've raved about it before—because it really is that good—but after a few weeks of using Rodan and Fields Enhancements Lash Boost ($150; rodanandfields.com), I could already see the difference in my lashes. But then it dawned on me that maybe they should be darker…that's where the tint comes in.

In perusing Blink's menu, I saw that they offered a tint and perm (also referred to as a lift) for $90 at their Saks Fifth Avenue location in New York City. After a little research, I thought, "Hey, this could be it." I made an appointment and went for it. The specialist complimented the length of my own lashes and explained to me that although they were already pretty dark, their blue-black solution would add some extra oomph. I was psyched!

I removed my eye makeup thoroughly and she applied the dye with a protective sticker under my eye so that nothing would get in. This part took about 15 minutes, and then it was time for the lift. I could see a slight difference with the dye, but it wasn't as drastic as I had thought (in my mind, the tips of my lashes were super light and that's why they didn't show up, but that wasn't the case)…

The New Year's Resolutions I'm Making for Healthier Hair and Glowing Skin

– health.com

As a beauty editor, you'd think I would have my beauty game in check. In a lot of areas I do—but I’m also human, so my makeup brushes go far too long between cleanings and I don't always remove my makeup before I work out. This year though, those things will change. Join me with beauty resolutions of your own. Dry-brushing, anyone? (I’m not there yet either; maybe next year.)

Clean my makeup brushes once a week

Every Friday I think of my weekend ahead and get this delightful feeling that I’ll have time to wash my makeup brushes—finally! I am an avid makeup-wearer, so I have a collection of about six brushes that I use daily. I’m aware of the product buildup, not to mention oil and dead skin that ends up trapped in the bristles, and yet I still fall short and end up not bathing my brushes as frequently as I ought to. This year, I commit to using my yet-to-be-opened BrushPearl and to pop the top on my Real Techniques Deep Cleansing Gel, which smells so yummy that it’s almost an incentive to suds up.

Mask on Sundays (or at least one night a week)

After a really good spin class, I dream of getting home to shower and throw on a sheet mask to relax (really, what’s a better way to wind down after some killer cardio?). Then I get home and I’m sucked into an endless cycle of watching TV with my roommate—why don’t I just shower and then mask while I binge watch? Good question. That’s why it’s on my list, and I think I’ll have my roommate mask with me, making the ritual all the more fun to do. My fave: Dr. Jart+ Water Replenishment Cotton Sheet Mask.

Use cuticle oil and hand cream every night

I preach about how our hands are one of the first places to show our age, and yet I pick my cuticles and let my digits get dry and cracked. I’ve been told by several manicurists that cuticle oil not only improves the appearance of your nails, but helps them grow, too. I really have no excuse because the TenOverTen Rose Cuticle Oil Pen makes it so easy to apply; I’ll be leaving that baby right next to my bed along with the Filorga Hand Cream. I’m addicted to its spa-like aroma, plus it packs anti-aging superstars like hyaluronic acid and collagen.

Remove my makeup before I work out

As bad as it is not to, there are just some nights after work when the last thing I want to do is wash my face in addition to working out—they’re both things I need to talk myself into doing in the first place. But every time I don’t wash my face and allow the makeup from my day to remain intact as I sweat, I wind up with a face full of blackheads, or worse, the first signs of a cystic pimple brewing deep below my skin’s surface. So to not hate myself each time this happens, I’m going to be relying on my trusty Glov On-The-Go Makeup Remover. To use, slip the microfiber pouch onto your finger, add water, and then wipe your makeup away—no cleanser necessary…

NBA Dancer Claims She Was Given a 'Jiggle Test' as Others Recall Developing Eating Disorders

Fifteen women, all of whom are former NBA dancers, are speaking out about what they call a “decades-long culture of brainwashing.”

Detailing claims of body shaming and the perpetuation of an unhealthy body image, the women came forward with their past incidents, telling Yahoo! Lifestyle about their experiences as entertainers in franchises including the Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Hornets, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks and Orlando Magic.

Lauren Herington, formerly a one-year member of the Bucks Dancers, alleged her coach said she thought Herington looked “questionable” weight-wise and had instructed her to put on the team’s spandex uniform in order to perform a “jiggle test” in front of the team. Herington was 18 years old.

“She’d come up and grab underneath my butt or the side of my belly. She’d be like, ‘Lose 5 lbs. by tomorrow and you’ll be fine,’ ” Herington told Yahoo! Lifestyle.

Her comments come three years after she brought a class-action lawsuit against the Bucks in 2015. In her suit, she alleged that the dancers were paid as little as $3-$4 an hour after covering costs of required beauty routines, like spray tans and manicures.

At that time, Herington told The Guardian that weight restrictions set by the dance team left her “dehydrating and starving” herself to fit into her uniform.

The Bucks eventually settled Herington’s suit, paying a total of $250,000 in lost wages to 40 dancers. In a statement to Yahoo! Lifestyle, the Bucks said they take all of the allegations “very seriously” but “have found no evidence to support these claims.”

In a statement to PEOPLE, Bucks’ Senior Vice President of Communications Barry Baum tells PEOPLE: “We treat our dancers with the utmost respect and professionalism and value their contributions as ambassadors of our team on and off the court. We are committed to ensuring that all of our employees have a safe and welcoming environment. In recent years we have made improvements to our dancers’ compensation plan to ensure that we pay our dancers fairly. We have the highest regard for our dancers and consider them an important part of our organization.”

As Herington continues to speak out, others are coming forward publicly for the first time.

Many of those who spoke with Yahoo! Lifestyle also described facing regular weigh-ins and body-fat assessments or “weight probation” or “weight warning” as consequences for appearing to be over a “goal weight…
