How This Former Ballerina Is Revolutionizing Home Workouts

– health.com

“I spent my teens and early 20s as a professional ballerina, dancing with companies in New York City and Montreal. After retiring in 2008, I went into the boutique fitness field. At first, the only space I could afford was a 500-square-foot room in a church, which meant there was no room for traditional equipment. I had to figure out: What can you do in a small footprint that gives people the benefit of a total gym? I came up with a high-intensity circuit that toned the full body. When I brought in mirrors, people loved them. They found the visual feedback inspiring and also helpful in keeping their form correct.

Fast-forward to 2016, which found me running three fitness studios across New York City. Getting to my own workouts was hard, especially because I was pregnant at the time. Biking or running on a treadmill in my apartment just didn’t appeal. I tried workout apps, but they weren’t immersive enough to hold my interest.

I started thinking how I could bring that small studio experience into my home…and thought back to the mirrors I’d put in that church years ago. I came up with Mirror, an interactive home gym that hangs on your wall.

In the early days, when I didn’t have a physical prototype, people couldn’t understand what the experience would be like. Then once it was made and they could experience it, I heard, ‘I can’t believe I didn’t think of this!’

Variety’s a key component of a good workout, so Mirror users can choose from live and on-demand classes in cardio, strength, yoga, barre, boxing, HIIT, and more… without leaving their home. I’ve heard from parents who say that for years they’ve struggled to find time to get out of their house and work out—and then felt guilty once they did. Being able to work out at home isn’t just a solution for them, but helps their whole family.

Many wellness-based goals are focused on future rewards—like making you stronger one day. Or thinner. Or healthier. That makes it really challenging to be successful. If you enjoy the experience now, future rewards will come. So that’s another mental shift I’m hoping Mirror will bring. Many people look in their mirror at home and spend time criticizing their body. I want this to help them celebrate what they’re capable of.”

The $7 Product J.Lo's Makeup Artist Uses to Create Her Head-to-Toe Glow

– health.com

Jennifer Lopez is famous for perfecting that elusive, never-too-shiny glow on the red carpet (heck, she even had a perfume named Glow). Luckily, J.Lo's makeup artist Scott Barnes is dishing on the technique he uses to help the star get that radiant, full-body effect—and trust us, it's good.

Barnes teamed up for a video on YouTuber Tati Westbrook's channel to showcase his new makeup brush line and some of his go-to techniques. The 30-minute video is worth a watch in its entirety. Barnes—who's also worked with Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion—shares some of his expert hacks, including why he applies contour under foundation, and that time he used L'Oréal Bronze Coin lipstick as a highlighter, lip color, and eyeshadow for a shoot. But if you just want the most interesting tidbit, it's Barnes' favorite drugstore product: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Lightweight Sunscreen Spray SPF 30. (Buy It, $7, target.com)

And no, it's not just because sun protection prevents aging. (Although, it totally does!) Barnes actually likes to use the sunscreen as a finishing tool on the red carpet to add to his clients' body glow. Mind. Blown.

RELATED: Jennifer Lopez’s Curly Lob Makes Gym Hair Look Good

There are several steps Barnes does to build that bronze base and afterward to add dimension. The first step is full-body foundation. If you've seen J.Lo's notorious "naked dress," then you're aware her glow doesn't end at her jawline. Unsurprisingly, Barnes is a proponent of extending makeup below the face. (In the video, he applies Tati's foundation all the way down her chest and even on her hands.) Naturally, Barnes also sells a product called Body Bling, a hard-core body bronzer that reviewers say works even on the palest of complexions.

RELATED: J.Lo Just Posted an Absolutely Insane Photo of Her Abs While Rocking a Neon Pink Bikini

Here's where the SPF comes into play. Post-foundation, Barnes will layer on the Neutrogena sunscreen spray to both set the foundation in place and enter "super glow" territory. "Forget the MAC setting spray," he quips in the video. (And of course, "this is also good for your skin, so when you go outside bronzed you maintain your sun protection," he adds.) After misting the sunscreen on Tati's chest, he then applied powder bronzer and highlighter to achieve what he calls "Barbie skin." There you have it.

Granted, yes, this slick, bronzed look is more editorial than everyday. "I see people who do really beautiful makeup and people look great on the street," he said in the video. "That's not my thing. You'll look good on film, but maybe in person you'll look like 'ah!'" Translation: This full four-step foundation, sunscreen, bronzer, and highlighter combination isn't exactly meant to look natural in person…

I Tried the Maelys Booty Mask That Khloe Kardashian Swears By for a Toned Butt

– health.com

I'm no stranger to a booty mask or any product that promises to tone and tighten. Scrubs and creams that claim to smooth, tone, and leave your cheeks with a healthy glow? I've tried them. Brushes and massagers that exfoliate and blast cellulite? Been there. If it’s for your ass and thick thighs, I’ve put it to the test. But no product aimed at treating the butt has stuck it out in my routine, and I was just about to give up on a holy grail booty product.

However, when I heard about a new butt mask and that peach queen Khloe Kardashian was a fan, I had to get my hands on it. Not only has this newcomer booty mask sold out on Sephora an impressive three times since launching in the U.S. in September 2018, but Kardashian posted a series of self-care Instagram stories using the "extra" luxurious cream.

Was this butt mask the real deal? For the sake of journalism (and my toosh), I needed to find out.

Maelys Cosmetics B-Tight Lift and Firm Booty Mask ($49; sephora.com) is made with firming collagen and guarana, a fruit native to the Amazon with seeds known to contain way more caffeine than coffee beans. Caffeine is extremely helpful in smoothing skin and reducing dimpling (aka cellulite), notes New York City-based dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD.

The formula also boasts detoxifying red grapefruit oil, which activates the lymphatic system. When that is stimulated, cellulite can be prevented or lessened, she adds.

The star ingredients are pink pepperslim and eco-slim. Pink pepperslim is a slimming oil known to reduce fat and is eight times more powerful than caffeine, while eco-slim has 46% higher concentration of caffeine than caffeine extracts. The bottom line? These ingredients could reduce sagging and improve tightness, says Dr. Jaliman.

It was finally time to see what all the fuss was about. I decided to give the gym a rest (who am I kidding, I wasn't really planning on working out anyway) in order to give this product a thorough test.

Upon opening the mask, I was surprised to see how much product you really got. Usually you get cheated with a partially full container or a travel-size amount in a large bottle, but this jar was jam-packed with a dreamy pink cream! I dipped the tips of my fingers in the jar, applied a generous amount of the product to my butt, and started rubbing the cream onto both cheeks.

The directions warn that the product is supposed to lightly warm up, and after a nice lather I felt a slightly warm sensation. I also noticed that the mask dried pretty quickly, which makes it great for slapping on in the mornings even if I'm in a rush (or applying at night, since it won't annoyingly stick to bed sheets)…

You Can Now Do Outdoor Yoga With Lemurs—and It’s as Magical as It Sounds

– health.com

Move over goat yoga, alpaca yoga, and dog yoga. Lemur yoga is about to take the world by storm.

According to The Metro, the Armathwaite Hall Hotel and Spa, near the Lake District Wildlife Park in Keswick, England, is now offering “lemoga,” also known as doing yoga outdoors with lemurs.

The lemurs already live in the nearby wildlife park, and they’re apparently very friendly and social, so they’re practically perfect yoga buddies.

RELATED: I Tried Snow-Ga and Don’t Ever Want to Go Back to Regular Yoga

“When you watch lemurs they do some form of the poses naturally — that typical pose warming their bellies in the sunshine,” said Richard Robinson, manager of the Lake District Wildlife Park, to the BBC. “It seemed to be a really good combination to encourage people to have a go and spend time with a lemur.”

RELATED: 15 Stretches You Should Do Every Day

The class is part of Armathwaite Hall’s “meet the wildlife” wellness program, which includes walking alpacas around hotels 400-acre grounds, meet-and-greets with meerkats, and special sessions with zookeepers.

RELATED: 10 Yoga Poses to Do at Your Desk

The hotel says “lemoga” is a good way for guests to “feel at one with nature, at the same time joining in with the lemurs’ play time.” They also claim the class is good for stress and reducing blood pressure, especially when lemurs are involved.

We challenge anyone not to get distracted by these inquisitive animals while they’re trying to perfect their downward dog. Frankly, these creatures are so irresistibly cute, we expect there could be more “lemoga” classes elsewhere around the world in the future.

Smallville Actress Allison Mack Recruited Women for a Sex Cult—Why Would a Person Do That?

Nothing fascinates us quite like cults. Documentaries about them have a, well, cult following, and groups that are rumored to have cult-like characteristics repeatedly make headlines. This week's news, however, is about more than just rumors.

On Monday, Smallville actress Allison Mack pleaded guilty to charges related to a group called Nxivm, after she allegedly manipulated and blackmailed women into being "sex slaves" for its leader.

Nxivm is a group based in Albany, New York, that billed itself as a self-help organization. In late 2017, the New York Times published an article about a disturbing internal society within Nxivm (called D.O.S.) that did horrifying things, such as burn founder Keith Raniere’s initials below members' hips with a cauterizing device. The article also alleged that members were told to starve themselves to achieve Raniere’s standard of beauty so they could have sexual encounters with him.

RELATED: College Admissions Scandal: A Psychologist Explains Why a Parent Would Cheat and Lie to Get Their Kids Into School

Since the investigation into the society began, increasingly alarming details have emerged, especially about Mack's involvement. In April 2018, Mack was arrested by the FBI on charges of sex trafficking, conspiracy to commit sex trafficking, and forced labor. At the time, she pleaded not guilty, but this week, she changed her plea.

As Mack tearfully pleaded guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy, she also admitted to recruiting women into the cult by telling them they were joining a female mentorship program. In addition, she confessed to forcing them to give her damaging personal information, or "collateral," so that she could blackmail them if they didn't follow her or Raniere’s orders. Now, Mack faces up to 40 years in prision. She's set to be sentenced in September.

Sounds like it could be straight out of one of those bingeworthy cult documentaries on Netflix, right?

Mack's involvement in this skin-crawling scheme got us thinking: How does an intelligent, successful young woman get caught up in such a twisted dystopian cult? Alexandra Stein, PhD, author of Terror, Love and Brainwashing: Attachment in Cults and Totalitarian Systems, has many thoughts on this, especially because she was once a member of a cult herself.

RELATED: Jussie Smollett Lied About Being the Victim of a Hate Crime, Police Say. Why Would Someone Do That?

First, Stein says people don't knowingly join cults. "Someone might go to a yoga class, or to a personal development seminar, or to a church, all for perfectly normal reasons," she says, explaining that cults often have a convincing facade…

5 Easy Barbell Exercises for Beginners

– health.com

Cardio is great—in fact, it’s a must. But there’s another beneficial component to physical fitness that many women are ignoring: weight lifting. And we’re not just talking about picking up those little 2-pound weights and doing a few bicep curls (though there’s nothing wrong with that). Hitting the weight room—and more specifically, using a barbell—challenges your body in a way nothing else can. “A barbell forces your body into a fixed position, which is biomechanically beneficial because it creates stability on the weight load. This, in turn, gives your muscles more stability to push and pull from, and that helps them stay more engaged,” explains Holly Perkins, CSCS, a Los Angeles–based celebrity trainer and author of Lift to Get Lean.

Lifting heavy becomes even more important as you age. “Women lose muscle mass and gain an average of five pounds of fat per decade,” says Michele Olson, PhD, CSCS, a senior clinical professor of sports science at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. “In other words, even if your body weight stays the same, if you don’t lift weights to maintain your muscle, you will lose about five pounds of muscle every 10 years and gain about five pounds of fat, which is not good for the heart or our bones.” Still not sure about entering that weight room? Read on for more benefits—plus a few strategies that will turn you into a lifting pro.

RELATED: 5 Amazing Things That Happen to Your Body When You Start Lifting Weights

4 Major benefits of barbell work

It Improves Your Overall Health. You’ve heard the saying that health is wealth, right? Keeping with that, let’s just say weight lifting is equivalent to winning the lottery. Research shows that it slashes your risk of ailments like stroke and heart disease and drastically improves bone and joint health. According to a 2018 University of Michigan study, people with stronger muscles are 50 percent more likely to live longer. And let’s not forget the mental benefits. “Strength training is really powerful for women,” notes Perkins. “It improves self-worth, self-esteem, and confidence, and it builds resilience on a personal and emotional level.”

It Boosts Your Metabolism. When you lift heavy weights, your body releases human growth hormone and testosterone, both of which help you develop lean muscle, says L.A.-based celebrity trainer Ashley Borden, creator of the AB Fit app. And having more lean muscle will naturally keep your metabolic rate fired up. “Muscles are much more metabolically active than fat,” explains Vonda Wright, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and chief of orthopedic sports medicine at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. “This means they take more calories to function, whereas fat doesn’t burn much energy.” In other words, when your muscles are built-up, you are torching more calories whether you are exercising or just chilling…

Jennifer Lopez’s Curly Lob Makes Gym Hair Look Good

– health.com

The gym probably isn't the birth place of your good hair day. Sweat, the deflating volume that comes along with that sweat, and hair tie dents don't usually exactly make for the type of hairstyle you want to capture in a pic and throw up on Instagram Stories. But leave it to Jennifer Lopez to change our expectations and make gym hair look, well, damn good.

Caught in paparazzi pics, J.Lo was snapped leaving the gym with her hair styled in a curly, super voluminous short lob.

With this look, J.Lo also redefined what one would call "gym hair," as it's not a messy topknot or a ponytail, though she could have easily just taken her hair down before walking out of the gym doors.

All we need now is for Lopez to show us how to get that J.Lo glow in just minutes after hopping off of a treadmill, and we're set.

Blake Lively Just Revealed the Exact Beauty Products She Uses Every Day

– health.com

Blake Lively not only serves total inspiration for our wardrobes (chic pantsuits, anyone?) but also for our daily makeup look (hello, natural glow!). And if you're blonde, you've probably shown a picture of the star to your colorist, trying to mimic her gold, Rapunzel-like mane. Hey, we don't blame you.

Luckily for us, the 31-year-old mom and actress recently shared her personal beauty collection on her Instagram Story, posting three photos of her impressive (and newly tidied) makeup drawer. Her stash includes foundation, highlighters, serums, lip products galore, and even an affordable drugstore facial sunscreen.

"When you organize once, then gotta share with the world," Lively captioned her post, labeling each product with its corresponding brand.

Looking at her collection, it's obvious that Lively is a fan of British makeup brand Charlotte Tilbury. We also couldn't help but notice that she sticks to a single tube of mascara, the cult favorite Diorshow. When it comes to her infamous wavy tresses, Lively keeps one hair product readily available in her drawer: Kerastase Resistance Volumifique Mousse, which explains her shiny, voluminous locks.

While we're not surprised that Lively's beauty haul includes pricier options like La Mer, By Terry, and Christian Louboutin, we didn't expect to see more affordable brands like Burt's Bees, Cerave, Stila, Urban Decay, and Essie as well.

Wondering which beauty products Lively uses on the reg? Here's everything we spotted in her stash.

• Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation ($46; sephora.com)

• Georgio Armani Beauty Fluid Sheer ($62; sephora.com)

• Marc Jacobs Beauty Dew Drops Coconut Gel Highlighter ($44; sephora.com)

• Stila Convertible Color Dual Lip and Cheek Cream ($25; amazon.com)

• By Terry Cellularose Brightening CC Lumi-Serum ($91; dermstore.com)

Jameela Jamil Posted a Close-Up Photo of Her Boob Stretch Marks for Everyone to See

– health.com

Body positivity is basically Jameela Jamil's middle name. She's made it her job to take down celebs who promote weight-loss products like detox teas and appetite suppressants, and she always celebrates natural bodies of all shapes and sizes. Her latest Instagram post is celebrating something all women have: stretch marks, specifically boob stretch marks.

"I have stretch marks all over my body and I hereby rename them all Babe Marks," The Good Place actress captioned a photo of herself tanning topless. "They are a sign my body dared to take up extra space in a society that demands our eternal thinness. They are my badge of honour for resisting society’s weaponizing of the female form."

RELATED: Jameela Jamil Just Revealed She Has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome—Here’s What to Know About the Rare Condition

Preach, Jameela! Stretch marks are a natural part of life, and in our opinion, they're beautiful.

Jamil isn't the first celeb to get candid about stretch marks. Chrissy Teigen posted a photo of her stretch marks on Instagram with the caption, "Stretchies say hi!" Reese Witherspoon also opened up in an interview with Vanity Fair about bodily changes after pregnancy, and stretch marks was one of them, of course.

Jamil also threw in a P.S. about sunscreen at the end of her caption: "My face is white because I wear spf 100 sunscreen like a boss," she wrote.

Again, girl knows what she's doing. "A good sunscreen really is the best anti-aging cream you can buy—far better than any fancy department store serum," Robert Anolik, MD, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at NYU School of Medicine, previously told Health.

There you have it, just another example of Jamil being a body-positivity hero. She never disappoints.
